Anybody else have this problem? I have a lot of awkward silences when I'm around my "friends". I don't mind just sitting in silence myself, but neurotypical people seem to. I don't want to sound repetitive or ask dumb questions like "what's your favorite color" "what books do you like" over and over just to end the silence because other people seem uncomfortable. I enjoy intellectual conversations, but at my age (14) there aren't any peers I know who also do. How do I come up with things to say?

This works quite well on television. I'd be interested to see someone try it in real life situation. :D

I used to find silences very awkward. Then I realized that a lot of other people sat in silence, and I didn't notice, because I was always trying to fill in with talk.

Try remaining silent....unless someone has asked you a question, or you have something to say.

Especially if you go to bars. Where, my wife, who used to do that a lot, says people sit and drink, they don't talk. She's an NT, so I guess she ought to know. We still don't talk a lot, unless it's something important. But she doesn't mind. I'm the talker in the family, and I'm AS, and it bothers me. But it doesn't seem to bother her.

Just some thoughts.

Btdt

I feel this way too. That's why I make friends with adults and older teens ^_______^ Animals too.

First all, you really shouldn't worry about what other people might think about you when you are being silent. It may sound hard to do being a teen and all, but your life is a lot easier that way. You have to realize that you are in charge of your life and if other people think you're weird, anti-social, etc. just know that they don't know you and they are not in control of what you do and what you say.

Also silence is actually much deeper than any deep word in the dictionary or any spiritual song in any album. Its because its a rare thing to find in today's busy body world. Many people fear it.

I'm here to talk about anything deep if you'd like.:D

Yes...I have this problem all the time.
I, too, enjoy intellectual conversations. I am 16 and most my age aren't interested in doing so. If I want to talk about something intellectual, I can talk to a few people online about it....either that or my grandmother who enjoys it.
As far as thinking of something to say, if there is a silence I usually just say something like..."Sooo, this is quiet". Usually that gets people laughing and talking about something.

Tell a story about every time an awkward silence occurs that 1 and 5 people think of Abraham Lincoln. Then after getting puzzled looks say it is false and tell them that they will think of it next time an awkward silence occurs.

I do it all the time. You think classmates don't imitate everything on TV. I sure do.
