Nothing!

There's like a million other things that you learn in school that make you smart.

But, people seem think that spelling is the only thing that's important.

I once heard someone in my class say "Really who can't spelling?" Laughing about it.

I was about to call this person a stupid slu*ty whore. Because they were one. Does this sex addict that probably has twenty different STD's serious think they are smarter than me?

It likes, "You're a loser becuase you don't have sex with very person in the school." Blah Blah Blah.

So I'm like, "Shut the hell up!."

I didn't really anything say any of these thing but I wanted to. The thing about spelling was said though.

Learning things doesn't make you "smart". Learning how to apply those things does.

Grammar, spelling, and word choice are a few methods we can use to ensure that we are able to communicate with one another in a printed medium. Casual use of such neologisms as "I was all like" or using numbers to represent phonemes ("sk8", "4vr", etc.) betray either laziness, ignorance, or a rather cavalier attitude toward the idea of being understood (which begs the question - if you don't care whether people can comprehend what you've written, why did you write?).

Since everyone in the United States, at least, is exposed to the concept of correct spelling (attendance of some form of education is mandatory in every state), "ignorance" is no longer an excuse. However, if one declines to attempt to apply said rules of spelling to one's own communications, this does seem to be an indicator that one lacks the intelligence to do so.

^ Hear! Hear! Well said, DeaconBlues!

Intelligent is as intelligent does. What good is a smarter-than-thou attitude if the person professing same refuses to give a practical demonstration?

to reiterate; smart is knowing things, intelligence is using them.

When you need to get a job, if your resume` has spelling errors, you'll likely not get a reply. It's a different world, 9-5. Been there, done that.

About the whole "your a loser if you do not have sex with everything that moves" comment, forget about it till you are out of high school. May they suffer from their false realities one day while you move up in the world and live a great life.

Is what is that people think if you spell then that makes you an idiot. But, my point is that people can process other knowledge as well but not be able to spell which in my notion doesn't make them an idiot.

My spelling used to be horrible but I still manged to get a 3.4 GPA and I spoke two languages at the time. So, I don't see how I was or am an idiot.

Otherwise, the school is an idiot also for giving an imbecile like me a 3.4 GPA and allowing me to have passed all the FCATs.

Penmanship use to be taught in grade school, but you never see classes for it anymore, it should
be mandatory, is it a sign of higher intelligence, no, but its something everyone should learn.
I have dysgraphia but I did learn to write, not very pretty writing but legible.

LOL! <-- Not directed at you, but at my own experiences, which parallel yours (except for the two languages).

It is not bad spelling that makes a person an idiot, but bad spelling will make people think that you're an idiot!

Good use of spelling, grammar and punctuation is like the skeleton key of communication

Spelling correctly means that you are smart. That doesn't mean that you are intelligent but it is a big help in later life for sure.

I'm 28 and haven't learned simple words (I still can't spell "resteraunt"...see, I know that's wrong, but I can't remember the correction! And I was 25 when I learned "business"), but I got great grades in school and have won awards for my writing.

I think if you know how to work with it it doesn't matter so much. I get my spelling checked either online (I do my writing in Notepad so it doesn't come with the program) or by online friends before I put it out officially.

I'm quite fussy when it comes to grammar and spelling. I know that it doesn't mean you're very intelligent but I try my best to spell correctly. It annoys me when someone I know can spell fine but they choose to use chatspeak the entire time so I can barely understand what they're writing. Not being a very good speller does not make you an idiot. There are a lot of very intelligent people who might not be the best spellers. :D
