I've been sick for two and a half weeks, it's not fun.

As far as off-the-shelf stuff, I've taken... DayQuil, NyQuil, Triaminic, Mucinex, Claritin, Claritin-D

So, my dad got a prescription for this cough syrup with codeine in it. I like codeine. Good stuff.

And I've got a five-day regimen of antibiotics my doctor prescribed me.

Have you tried chicken soup? Hope you feel better soon - no more codeine!

Chicken soup is ineffective.

Codeine is awesome. I've only had it once before after a minor surgery.

Be careful regarding the codeine, it is an opiate and it is possible to get addicted to it.

If I was you I would talk to your doctor, I have no wish for you to suffer needless pain so if you need an opiate then you should take it. But if you just want an opiate then you should not take it, I think if possible you should try to get moved onto some other painkiller which is not an opiate.

Based on the list of drugs which you have been taking it sounds like you have a cold or hay fever, do you think that you should be taking opiates for such a condition ?

The first few drugs are cold / flu treatments while the Claritin (loratadine) is an antihistamine.

Are you contagious??? If so, don't cough on your computer :D

Hope you're feeling better by now. Codeine is a potent cough suppressant and does work for an intractable cough, a tried-and-true remedy that works. But Woodpecker is right, it's an opiate too. Usually codeine is taken strictly short-term to cure that cough.

Personally, I hate cough syrup. Yuck. Codeine cough syrup makes me sooo sleepy. I've had to take codeine cough syrup when I had pneumonia...not fun.

Maybe you have swine flu? :pig:

Well LabPet, while I have joked in the past about a new version of the flu which can travel down phone wires, by radiowaves or through other communications networks I do not think it has appeared yet. But it is nice to see someone else thinking along the same lines. It boosts my ego to think that the things which I think are funny are also thought of as funny by someone else.

If it does appear in the wild I will wrap my phone and computer keyboard in plastic bags.

Good point about the cough suppressing ability of opiates, it had slipped out of my mind. I was concentrating on pain issues and the opiates. I heard that the original medical use of heroin was to treat TB cases who were coughing too much, one of my worries about the use of large amounts of opiates is that they tend to act as respiratory depressants.

Yeah, codeine cough syrup does work. Personally, I hate medicine but a respiratory depressant can allow for healing when the coughing becomes too consuming. I've read those with a seriously bad cough can break ribs just from coughing - wow!

If one is sick enough then codeine induced sleep may help anyhow; the premise of Nyquil and Theraflu.

Hope you all have virus detection on your computer in case WeiszGuy coughs! <kidding>

Hope you're feeling better WeiszGuy.

Breaking ribs through too much strong coughing ! That sounds very painful and unpleasent. I heard that broken ribs are close to impossible to treat.

The question of respiratory depressants is an interesting one, I can follow the idea in my mind that a small dose mght be good as it stops the coughing. But I worry that the dose might be too large and stop all breathing.

I once heard the tale of a man who wanted a new chauffeur. He took the three applicants to a nasty looking winding road which had a big horrible drop off the side down into the sea. He then asked the men "how close could you drive my car to edge without dropping it off the side into the sea".

Man one says "One foot"
Man two says "One inch"
Man three says "I would rather not go near the edge"

Man three was judged to be the best man for the job, he choose to not take a risk to show off. He was more careful. He would view is safety as more important than the thrill of driving close to the edge. I think that I am man three, I would rather not take a big risk which offers no or little reward.

While I am a chemist I am quite wary about taking drugs, I try to limit the number of new and exotic substances which I start adding to my body. But I am a great fan of a few drugs, when I get a bad cold I always try to get some lemsip pills.
