My grandmother used to offend people on a regular basis when she would use the word unusual to describe something about them. It could have been their decorating style, clothes, accent..anything really. But to her that was the ultimate compliment. Saying that something was unusual meant to her that it was unique and not boring.

Once I was trying to give someone with AS a compliment. I did not know about AS at the time. His response to me was, "I am normal." I said to him that normal was average, like getting a "C" in a class in school, but to me he is extraordinary, like getting an "A+"

Yes I knew from the beginning that there was something different about him, but that is what made me like him so much in the first place.

Yeah, they can sense when something's different. They've said it to my face. Some don't and I'm left guessing. That is harder to deal with.
