I don't know why, but for some reason I've had this overwhelming feeling that life is pointless. I can't say that anything is going badly in my life, but something doesn't feel right. Although I'm not completely depressed, I feel uninspired and uninterested in life. I keep thinking about my future, and I can't feel excited at all because no matter what I decide to do with my life, I'll feel like I'm simply killing time. I don't want to be a burden to society and live completely off of social security, but I just can't think of anything that I can do that can make me feel like I'm contributing to society. And I'm most likely not going to be able to go to college. Is this feeling a sign of depression? I can still enjoy things, just not as much as I used to.

BTW I'm an 18 year old senior in high school.

Not being "completely depressed' doesn't erase the fact that you aren't feeling well. Many of the things you're describing here are classic symptoms of depression. What people don't seem to realise that depression isn't necessary sadness, it is literally the depressing of your faculties and perceptions--things become duller, your thoughts more sluggish, your motivation drains. It's ok to feel this way and there are ways to treat it. I would recommend talking to your GP, or someone you know and trust, and trying to find out what your options are for addressing this problem.

this works for me, even though your mileage may indeed vary- vigorous outdoor exercise, every day, for at least an hour. try to find something not too hard on your joints.

I felt like that at your age. I happened across this book:

http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?se ... rsion=NASB

Ecclesiastes, one of the many books inside the Bible. It spoke to all of the issues and doubts that I was having. I've since turned to it whenever I've been in crisis. It's saved me from suicide too many times to count.

I highly recommend this book, if you're like me it will change your life!

Well, life IS pointless but you should pretend that it has a meaning for your own mental health.

Some say you should give it a meaning. Of course, the ending is the same.

At least, we are living agreeable times: we have technology and almost anything on our demand. It is not that bad.

But it could be worse than that. :/

Just want to throw something out there...if it is pointless, what are you going to do about it? I mean sure there is the healing approach but maybe like me you are past that and would do better to find a way to make existance meaningful in the face of pointlessness. That may not make much sense but its what I am trying to work on I suppose.

Thats a pretty standard feeling for many 18 years olds, NT or on the spectrum. I think only a minority of people have a clear view of their goals at that point. The rest me included muddle thru it onto we find something that clicks.

But really the ammount of things you could do, even being on the spectrum, is damn near infinate. Its kind of a process of learning what you are good at, and what you enjoy or at least can tolerate doing. Simply collecting different experiences, trying different things can be part of the process. Being dissatisfied is not necessarily a bad thing if you can use it as a motivator to do something about it.

Ecclesiastes is probally the only book from the bible written by an Aspie. (Yes we were around thousands of years ago as well). The author of Ecclesiates Quoleth, should be added to the list of Aspie famous people.

I always find hope reading Ecclesiastes, I hope you find hope as well:
