Alright leave, don't make a big fuss about it. Though if I recall this isn't the first time you have said you were going to leave and never have. If you don't like the site, leave, if not, stay, but don't make a big deal of it.

For many, it is a very big deal. Your post is very insensitive, and not appropriate for The Haven.

Agree with this ^

Unfortunately, for many its not about actual conversation or learning other people's perspectives.

Ironically, those that say they are the most accepting & tolerant are often in fact the least.

My point was that this is hardly the first time Tim has made a charade about leaving WrongPlanet and never has. One must wonder if he does this just for attention.

I don't know the circumstances behind Tim's current predicament, but if i am reading into this correctly, the problem stems from some things happening in PPR, would it not, then, for you Tim to be wise to just avoid PPR completely?

Most PPR regulars don't post in the other forums, and the ones that do, like me, have a different style for the different forums. I think theists assume atheists look down on/ hate them - but it's not always true. I used to be a theist and I have an understanding of the religious experience. I also realise that the person I'm talking to has feelings, as well. I admit some atheists are jerks, but that's true of any group of people.

You're such a long-term part of the fabric of PPR, it would be sad to see you leave.

It happens in every group, not just PPR... some people just can't help but spew fire and venomous hatred to all things religion. Of course, these are the same people that'll cry foul should anyone put down their lifestyle choice(s) of preference. It can be hard to ignore when it's particularly insulting as well as 99% baseless... some people have a huge amount of hatred for something they know almost nothing about!

What I don't understand is why do some religious people take it personally when their faith is being criticized. It's not like you're being personally attacked/criticized. It's your religion/faith that is. And your religion/faith may change and evolve and even disappear. Yet you remain the same person you are with or without faith.

I know when I was a fundamentalist Christian, I used to get challenged a lot by atheists, and I would welcome it. Sure, some of them were quite aggressive and, dare I say, jerks, but I looked at it positively rather than negatively because they were at least showing some interest in my faith.

When one says, "All x are idiots and need to die!" and you happen to be one of those x's in question, that's not just an abstract - that's someone calling you out and it's pretty hard to ignore and walk away from.

Interesting that some people who scream they don't want anything "shoved down their throats" are quite skilled with the use of throat funnels and cram-wands themselves. ;)

Ok, fair enough. But let's be honest here, when was the last time this happened in PPR? Maybe it has happened a few times, but from my time spent there, I don't recall that ever happening. At least such comments were never left unmoderated if they were ever posted.

Scary thing is, I'm not talking about PPR which I rarely visit... I'm talking about everywhere else on WP!

As much as I tried to be non-specific and abstract and avoid specific groups, etc. I'll bow out completely for the sake of civility - something we could use a lot more of here and in real life! ;)

Online forums are addictive, and your addiction is eight years strong; if you're really leaving then good luck overcoming that. Though after so much time, one might conclude you're where you belong and where you need to be.

Well, they're jerks - but they don't make up the majority of atheists, even if it seems that way.

If anyone stoops to that level of abusive posting, then you have every right (nay, duty) to report them to the mods, PPR or not.

The first step to solving a problem is acknowledging there is a problem.

I second that. Tim doesn't need logic right now. He needs compassion.

what i find interesting is that... everyone (including me) seems to have read into his thread what they think is the problem with the site, not what Tim_Tex was actually struggling with.

if you go back through Tim_Tex's actual recent posts, you'll see the thread where he personally identifies that he feels that he is not welcome - it's a dating thread where women on the site are talking about the type of men they don't want. apparently about 7 women members (out of 35,000 or so) don't want to date a religious person or a conservative. that isn't very many out of the total number that posted in the thread, but it may just have been the "straw that broke the camel's back", where Tim_Tex felt that he was too much of an outsider on the site with a sort of fringe type of views (that may be more common in the community where he lives).

anyway, it is the women's prerogative to not to want to date men with _X_ views, and it is also Tim_Tex's prerogative to feel left out by those few members that stated that. again, most likely it was more than one thread and more than one comment that made him feel that way, but it looks like ultimately it wasn't PPR or bullying or anything like that which made him want to leave. so let's keep this in perspective.

I wouldn't want a religious girlfriend or a social conservative, and I'm a conservative myself.
