I hate the word sorry. I don't know why I hate it :( I get so angry when people say that word for every little thing. The only time I like it is when I feel people mean it. Does anyone else feel like this?

hehe, you would not like it where i live then, the word sorry is a part of life here. i would think people say it at least 3 times a day.

it happens usually when you bump into someone when travelling places, both people say sorry when they bump into each other, its quite funny actually. you could bang into someone on purpose and they would still say sorry.

over here that kind of sorry is more about a politness thing more than meaning it though, its just the english ettiquette. :)

I think there are two categories
- I have caused wrong or harm to you and apologise
- I may have infringed on your personal space or ideas and want you to know I mean no harm or offence

I used to feel the same way but I got over it. You just have to accept the commonality of the phrase.

I think I say it too much. I probably seem extremely timid when I apologize for everything.

I know some people who apologize when they've obviously done nothing wrong and it makes me mad. It's like they are accusing me of being so unreasonable as to think they've done something wrong when they haven't.

Some people say it as if it were a nervous tick, but for the most part I've learned that it's one of those social rules that I've needed to adjust to. Like opening doors for other people and occasionally smiling. It's annoying, yes, but when used properly it's not the worst thing in the world.

In English, it's in fact OK for me. I'm not sure if it's because it's because shorter than the respective word in my mother tongue ("Entschuldigung"), or if I have less emotional connection to it.

But yes, when people use it for every minor thing, it's strange.

Why are you assuming that they think you unreasonably think they have done something wrong? The simpler, more immediate assumption to make is that they simply think, or are worried, that they've done something wrong. Perhaps they are insecure.

This goes for me too except when it comes to potential mates.
