I understand that this topic raises a lot of controversy, and I'm not saying that everybody should be cured.

A lot of people say that Einstein and Gates were autistic; therefore it shouldn't be cured. But Einstein wasn't just talented at physics; he was talented at violin, sailing, and even gave speeches about the wars happening at the time! He was well-rounded in fact. He also engaged in extramartial affairs, which is very un-autistic like. Gates was able to forge many social connections on his way to becoming the founder of Microsoft.

You could say that there are successful people with autism, but I feel a lot of you are taking it to the point where you are saying "autism IS success". There are countless people on this forum that are unemployed, failing school, can't make the necessary social connections, ect, to a degree which EXCEEDS the NT prevalence.

I supported it myself because I was good at math. I thought I would excel in engineering, but engineering also involves concepts, which string the formulas together, and I'm horrible at concepts. It seems that all I can do is compute formulas really fast, which isn't a useful skill in today's world because computers can do it faster.

Additionally, I've been socially isolated most of my life.

From looking up articles in my spare time, I've found out that difficulty breathing through the nose and sleep apnea could be a possible cause of autism. I went to my doctor and he examined me. He said that I was right! I'm being treated for it, and I feel more aware in my daily life.

Social connections can have as much with social capital as with social skills to do, and the social capital is very seldom affected by mental disorders in modern society.

Autism is my identity and is unaffected by society. Of that reason I'm proud of being autistic since it is my independence in a society which love to define and control other people. To give myself over to the society and telling them they are free to school me, employ me and socializing me is not something I think I would prefer more than having self-control and identity, and being able to learn what I want and work in the way I want. Success to me is to be my self.

That said, all to its own and if someone want a cure I would not prevent it ;)

Yes, it's a possible cause, however my theory of mind is what interrupts my sleep patterns. I'm all too certain I was born aspergian. I too have a lot of computational ability, however approximately the opposite problem - I haven't left room in my brain studying code for any excess of equasive math. I dropped out as a high school junior and got my GED because my "prestigious" high school lacked computer science anywhere beyond beginner web design for the 3 years I attended it. Socially I'm perhaps in the lower 35th percentile, I get around and know quite the who's-who, but that doesn't mean I ever really get close to anybody. Occam's razor runs into how you define "cured" here. I'm treated like some sort of bargain basement, 21st century information plumber by most people I know, so I'd love to be bestowed the social climbing skills to abandon that status, but if autism is success, I'd probably end up starving or homeless if those social abilities displaced those of mine for deductive reasoning.

For me personally I would like to cure my Asperger's syndrome/HFA/PDD-NOS. The reason for that is because I feel sometimes feel like I can't speak right, and or pronounce words right. Not only that I feel like I learn certain things slow. I wish that I was more social and had a social life.

I just wish I could naturally emphasize with other people and form real social bonds.

Same here, but this time, a permanent friendship, since I had 4 temporary ones and I felt depressed because of it.

I'm quite happy being an Aspie, to be honest. I wouldn't have me any other way.

I am the type of aspie that can do some of that, but I just can't seem to handle the success part of living [IOW getting people to hire me and pay me and respect me].

I don't think so, all this could do is make you tired, sleepy etc. Fixing this if you have these issues will make you feel better though, with that said is if this cures 100% you then must have been mis-diagnosed in the first place.
