UPDATE

There were two donations which amounted to $150. I bumped it to $220.

A few hours ago I drove from San Francisco to San Jose, gave Walter the money and some envelopes he asked for. I camouflaged them inside an envelope inside a worn-out bag, so hopefully he doesn't get robbed immediately.

Walter is quite coherent and self-aware and can carry on a conversation. He definitely has the homeless look, though.

I wasn't following all the thread and I am sorry but I have to ask this: is he functional enough to get a job, like any cleaning job or example?

Hello Boo Face, he is homeless, as above, has chronic diabetes with a serious infection to one of his feet and has a massive rack of vagrancy fines stacked up against him. I think his chances of finding a job right now are virtually nil.

I hope he can someday get a basic no-fee savings account sometime. that is a lot of $$$ to be carrying around In that area.

I dont know if theres pnc banks in that area but they offer a no fee checking and savings account, most banks offer a no fee savings as long as you keep money in the account. the problem is they like you having an address

You would probably need an id too. I don't know if he has one and I don't know how strict they are in California but last year I was trying to get an id in NY and couldn't come up with enough proof of identity to get one. In the end I managed to get Medicaid with my expired id and it bumped me up to having enough points of proof to get it.

It might be possible to get him one of those prepaid visas or mastercards. They only have a one time fee to buy and set up the card. The thing is he'd still need an address and I.D to get one. But if he can get it anyone can deposit funds onto it for him.

I have a prepaid credit card. I didn't need an id to get it. All I needed was my social security number to put in the application form and an address to mail it to.

I went nearly a decade without an id.

Will his vagrancy fines be registered against his social security number?

That's great mate, thank you!

I hope laying low for a while and having a bit of money might help him calm down a bit as I imagine right now he's too scared to reach out to anybody.

I can't promise to contribute monthly right now but I'll keep watching this thread and get involved as I can if something comes up.

Thank you auntblabby too for making the thread, maybe we'll eventually manage to figure out something more permanent for Walter.

They don't do credit checks when getting a prepaid card, if that's what they use the social security number for. I'm assuming the fines would have indeed resulted in a credit default against him.

Here is what I don't understand--maybe I missed something: Why isn't someone challenging the corrupt (presumably social worker) payee who is pocketing his Disability check?

PrncssAlay - As far as I can see he is all alone, he is not able to challenge this and has no one to help him.

Blue Bean - I'm just concerned that any funds registered against his social security number could be appropriated to pay his fines.

yes, cash must be king in this case, walter needs to be under the financial radar, so to speak. nothing must show up in the network.

Will say prayers, and watch to see how things go.

If I had money of my own, I'd send something.

Hope things improve.

Would gift cards (like Target or grocery store) be good for him?

I was wondering about bankruptcy as an option for him.
but when I did some research guess what still has to be paid?
Fines. For being poor and homeless included.
