So, I thought everything was good-to-go and was just busy getting ready to be fully out of my current place (the awful one) and into the new one later this month, then I got hit in the face with more BS the other night.
I pull into the driveway in the evening after working late, all sick and exhausted, and my landlord comes outside (she lives in another unit on the premises) and says she wants to talk with me. Um, ok. So, I walk over to her porch and she starts getting all worked up, wanting to know why I had left a rent check in her mailbox for the month of August.
She was hardly making any sense at all, but from what I understood, she thought I was planning to be out on August 1st, even though our verbal agreement and my formal written notice to her that she signed and dated as an indication that she understood the arrangements, clearly stated that I was giving my formal 60 days notice (as she required) as of July 1st and would be out by September 1st.
She went on to say that since I "hadn't paid my rent for July", she'd assumed that I was using the security deposit for my last month's rent and would be out August 1st, like I'd "told her previously." Of course, none of this is true and I have never skipped or been late with a rent payment. I couldn't get a word in edgewise and just said I was going to clarify the situation, got back into my car and drove straight back to my office.
I made copies of the cleared July rent check that was endorsed by her, as well as all the cleared checks from this past year and a copy of the written statement about my formal 60 days' notice that was signed and dated by her, with the relevant sentences highlighted. Then, I typed up a cover letter detailing everything and sent a certified copy to her first thing the next morning. I also hand-delivered a copy of everything to her that same evening, about an hour after our conversation.
She wound up apologizing, but then started saying that since she'd thought I hadn't paid for July, she'd also thought maybe I wasn't moving afterall (???) and she hadn't shown the apartment to any new tenants yet. None of this makes any sense. I don't know if she is genuinely confused, due to a combination of the language barrier and what I suspect to be mild dementia (she's 86), or if she is just upset she hasn't found a new tenant and is trying to come up with creative ways to get me not to leave.
But, either way, I've tried the best I possibly could to be clear and to document everything thoroughly and am just plowing ahead with my move into the new place on the 10th. I picked up the keys to the new place this evening and am going to be so glad to get out of where I'm at! This saga really needs to end.
