Yeah, it is very condescending spoken from adult to adult. I have had that happen to me on occasion and it irritates me.

I also dislike it just because I hate the sound of it too--like the auditory abomination that is the word "moist." The sound "sssssshhhhhh" is right up there at the top of the list with the word "moist".

I can't understand from both sides.

It depends when it is employed. Sometimes you have a limited opportunity to listen to something and if people are talking over it you will miss. Or if you are really trying to concentrate on something.

Yes you can explain, but sometimes you need something quick.

I do find it annoying as the receiver admittedly. I don't use it that often. it can become like a reflex when you need it.

I never got the problem with the word moist. There are some pretty similar sounding would I recon if you said to a native speak you wouldn't get any reaction.

I suggest it not to do with the sound of the word but the concept.

I hate the noise 'shhhhhh' makes. It pierces my eardrum like a cold spike and makes me wince and shrink inside.
