You are not a defective person because you are autistic.

Welcome to Wrong Planet!

Thank you!! This is very kind.

It is not, I’ve been involuntarily homeless multiple times in my life. It really does suck.

As this is your first post, welcome. I’m glad you decided to post.

What sort of work do you do?

Thank you.

I haven’t been able to keep a job. I was laid off due to covid and really should have been let go a long time before that.

I just started a new job in a call center for a major insurance company. I can do calls, I’ve done it successfully before, it’s the amount of material and style of training I can’t do-cognitively.

They also pulled us out of training two weeks early and threw us on the phones with no help.

I messed up every call today (legit this isnt me just being hard on myself) and I cried so much.

There is no way I will be able to keep up.

Welcome to WP. How long ago did you start your job?

I worked in fast food, restaurants, retail, etc for a while and with each new one I started I felt like I was in over my head, and thought for sure I'd be fired. There were so many things to remember to do for every little thing and my memory is terrible. It was very overwhelming to try and interact with the customers while also trying to recall each step needed for specific actions.

Somehow I managed to last much longer in those jobs than I would have thought possible. Gradually I began to remember the info/steps and felt more capable. I also figured out (after many years) how to take better notes that I could reference until I committed things to memory.

Another thing I learned (by watching NTs) is to be open with customers about being a new employee who's still learning. I thought I needed to not let them know they were dealing with a new person because I thought it wouldn't be professional and I am prideful. But saying "sorry, I'm still learning... Thank you for your patience..." etc gets good results in my experience.

Thank you!! !

Thanks-I’m not saying anyone else is, but I do feel pretty defective myself.

I have a few other dx though that play off the asd and make it things even more difficult.

I’m just burnt out on things falling apart. Burnt out on picking up the pieces.

Just come to work with a clear slate.

You just might not have done as bad as you think you’ve done.

It gets cold in most of the South, too.

Nashville is almost as cold as NYC—but it gets much less snow.

Please try to not be apprehensive about tomorrow.

Aurora is wiser than I am.

Thank you Kraftie, though I believe you're quite wise too! :) Any wisdom I have has only come after many failures and learning from them.

Try to find your nitch. A job that fits you. I know someone who went through one job after another and not very good at any of them. But finally got into private security which fit well, and has been working for the same company over 20 years.

Thank you for this reply.

The problem is that the jobs I would be able to handle no problem do not pay enough for me to support myself.

I am all alone and I have no one else to help me financially.

My family is abusive and I am no contact with them.

It’s ok. I’ll figure something out. No worries!

I sounds like you are pretty tough, in spite of the challenges. Let us know where we can help. If you happen to be in Florida, there is a program I work with that can help you with housing and jobs. With a diagnosis of autistic spectrum, you should be able to get into it pretty quickly.

Keep trying at your job.

I have a very long, long learning curve. It takes me forever to get the gist of new jobs, new procedures. Then, once I "get" it, I've got and and can move quickly. But beforehand, that curve just sits flat as a pancake.

Take care and keep posting. If you don't want "advice" but just support, you can say that too.

Thank you again for all of these kind replies.

I really don’t have anyone irl, so it’s nice to know that anybody cares even if they are just strangers online.

What state are you in?

Maybe they have similar programs to that which BlazingStar mentioned. Many states have programs which seek to prevent homelessness.

I know your situation is a grind.

I see you’re still at your job :) How’s your day so far?
