I know that a Facebook page called Everyday Aspergers sometimes has links to tech & computer jobs for people on the spectrum with a program called Ultranauts. Run by Samantha Craft, who is active in the community re:employment opportunities, if & when you’re ready.

Hang in there, Fenn.

I just looked at the paperwork they sent - the official “on paper” story is I was a part of a “reduction in force” covering 4 departments and 7 individuals. Somehow I doubt I would have been “picked” if i had been at the head of the pack - or even in the middle - but the “on paper” version looks better. My boss used the word “performance” on the phone at the beginning of the meeting. The lady from HR stuck to the script.

Thanks to all who replied

That means you're eligible for unemployment in all states.

The reason is everyone else on the team got more done than me - by a lot. I am ADHD (diagnosed) and ASD (undiagnosed) and have low EF skills and that didn’t mix well with two years of social distancing and a boss who is a spectacular technical guy but poor project manager. And there were days i just didn’t get anything done. A lot of them. They probably also wanted to free up my salary for a new technical network/software architect position they are creating. I might try to fight it but in a way I agree with them. I didn’t get the job done.

I am a computer guy. I can write software, I have been a DBA and my last job was DevOps Engineer. Most of the other guys were from Ops I was the only one from Dev. They wanted to do everything by hand and got faster and faster every time they did something - i got slower. If i could automate it - which took time i could make it faster - but not as flexible as a top flight Ops guy. But i couldn’t automate fast enough and would hyperfocus on the wrong things. “Rabbit holes”. Sometimes nothing to do with work at all. Mood issues - dysthymia - and possible bi-polar ii - or not.

My boss said in my last review that when I got stuff done it was really really good but he wanted more stuff faster. But it wasn’t happening.

I'm sorry you were sacked.

It was your employer's responsibility to explore workplace adjustments for you to help you remain in employment. Especially if they were aware of your diagnosis and the barriers you were experiencing. Here in the UK it would easily be a disability discrimination case.

Last time I lost a job, I cried my eyes out. And I’m not the crying type.

Mentally I bid farewell to it months prior, I had interviewed for like 4 positions by the time I was let go. They got me before I got them. I refused to sign my discharge papers, packed my things and left. That job gave me the important hope of making it in real world after being a recluse for several years, but I quickly outgrew it. I didn't cry over it one bit, it was time to move on to bigger and better things. I was surprised I wasn't fired the Friday prior, Monday I told coworker that it's a shocker. They got around to me on Tuesday. It was not for performance reasons but due to conflicting priorities from the management and some difficult tempers. I got the better end of that deal anyway, the new place pays much better and less attitude.

Don't get hung up on it, man. The job market in that segment is favorable. People are leaving at will and companies struggle to fill positions. If you say the right things you'll be back in the saddle in no time. Get your references together. It's even possible to completely omit the circumstances of your departure from the last place.

He doesn't have to, actually.....what it said in the papers he was given was that he wasn't fired----he was laid off.

Fortunately, the time I "cried my eyes out" was about May, 1980. I got my present job 11/3/1980.

6 months out, eh? 8 for me... I was growing worried after those months but the wait was ultimately worth it.

You've been at your job for 40+ years? Wow, that's some loyalty.

When I retire, it will be 42 years and 2 months.

It's not so much loyalty-----but complacency

@Fenn -- It seems you have marketable skills.

I wouldn’t worry so much about age. I was 56 the last time I was laid off and 59 the last time I was on a job search. Surprisingly, age never seemed to be a concern. BTW if you want an overview of my career there's a recent comment in my posting history that covers it.

I don't want to sugar coat things. When I was first laid off, I needed lorazepam for a while to prevent waking up in the middle of the night in a panic.

You should get busy putting your resume together on Dice and focus on doing a thorough job of that before actively looking.

It's my impression you were in the wrong job. There are probably other roles better suited to your skillset and work style. Not all jobs are remote but you'll have an easier time landing the jobs that are.

I won't say "good luck" because you shouldn't be depending on luck.

Sorry to hear this, Fenn, and I hope you find something better. I can relate. I've had performance issues at jobs where they gave me objectively unfair ways to meet my standards. And were happy to admit it unofficially.

“You know what - it’s not working out. Give me back the suit.” Tony Stark to Peter Parker

“I lost the Stark Internship!” Peter Parker to Aunt Mae

Today it is for real. I have to go in and return my work laptop and collect my books and family pictures and stuff from my cubical.

Reminds of when they took Mr. Banks boutonniere carnation, punched a hole in his bowler hat and ruined his official Banker’s umbrella.

New chapter.

Peter Parker didn't do so badly afterwards :)

Seriously, I sense that you will get another job soon.

When I was let go from a part-time job once, I was "escorted" out, and told never to come back.

And I was only laid-off.
