I'm going to view the place this evening. It's $610 incl (including cable, woohoo!,) which is a significant savings compared to the $750 I pay now. It's cheap because the house is on the market and if it sells the owners can evict if they want to live in the premises. But if this happens, I will effectively be made homeless, which will bump me up on the housing registry.
So I really hope I get it, 'cause I am sick of being hungry and broke.
Also, I have applied for a cafeteria worker job. So I could possibly be solvent. But jobs are competitive and I've been out of the market.
So everything remains in flux. I managed to borrow $100 for a deposit. I hope it's enough. It's available immediately, but I'm going to offer to take it on the 15th. I will be able to pay $210 then, the balance of half. And I'm assuming he doesn't want first and let, as it's short-term.
I think I will never be settled.

Yep....you might be taking a chance with this. I hope you're not made "effectively homeless."

Obviously, it's a good deal, provided you're not evicted! I'll have to look up the eviction laws for Ontario, or for Kingston--but, maybe, you could save up some bucks while they pursue the eviction. People do that in NYC all the time.

Is the place in a better area than where you live now?

Your present area seemed like a pretty dingy area. It seemed like a neglected area, where they do city services reluctantly.

Well, it's a moot point. I didn't get a good vibe, so I'm going to stay put and put my hopes into getting a job.
Frankly, I'm relieved. I don't think I could have handled the upheaval. Plus I like where I am.

No it isn't! Midtown is cool. My building is right on the cusp of residential and retail, so there's a mixture of people. Granted the building is badly maintained and has no security, but the location is excellent. The residential area boasts some nice, well-maintained houses.

But yeah, not moving. Phew :D

I stand corrected.

I'm glad you live in a decent area.

It's a pity you can't save $150 (plus cable).

I would love to see some pictures of your area off the main drag.

All "main drags" are rather dingy in character, since they are commercial.

I should have figured that out.

Princess Street is dingy for sure (although there are some great restaurants,) but once you go back into the neighbourhoods, it's pretty nice. I'm in Sunnyside, which is now part of Williamsville. I'll get some snaps and PM you.

Thanks!

We have a Sunnyside in Queens as well. It used to be primarily Hispanic, and a rather dingy area.

Recently, though, it's become "gentrified." It's a "hip" area because it's a short commute from there into Manhattan.

More and more of downtown is becoming student ghetto. And they drive the rents right up!

*hugs* :D
The cafeteria job is for a local charitable organization set up to assist people with developmental disabilities. It's a casual position, not many hours, which is good. Fingers crossed.

Sometimes risks are good to take, and if it helps you even in the short term it's a good thing. The savings alone might help you get a bit of money together in case you do have to move again quickly; best of luck!

I hope you don't mind me jumping in on this thread rather than starting a new one, but I'm in a similar position... Found a beautiful property to rent in an area I've wanted to live in for years; a nice two-storey, one bedroom place backing onto a forest.
I sent in an application tonight, which was all good apart from the one question about whether I've not received my bond back in the past... Unfortunately when I was a heavy drinker/user I ended up a month behind in rent and the real estate agent withheld my bond as payment for that.

Does anybody have any experience with that situation? Were you able to take on a lease solely in your own name afterwards? I'm hoping it doesn't completely destroy my chances of living alone again, particularly with getting this place as it's freaking amazing. Now begins the waiting game.

As long as you're not in some "eviction database," I don't see how a landlord could deny you a lease in your own name--provided you meet the income and credit requirements.

If you weren't evicted from the apartment, I doubt it that you'll be denied a future apartment. They just took your security, it sounds like.

The "bond" you allude to is called the "security," as in the "one months rent and security" that is usually required in advance when beginning to rent an apartment.

Oooh sounds lovely! Especially the forest. You could sit out at night and listen to the forest creatures.

Because of my bankruptcy, I can't rent from any agencies, so it limits my search.

Fingers crossed for you.

How long ago did you declare bankruptcy?

In the US, it takes seven years before a bankruptcy gets taken off your credit report.

I'll have to search for how they do this in Canada.

But it's certainly not on your record forever.

Seven years in Canada too. Maybe by then I'll have some solvency.
