Maybe the Salvation Army. I do not know if ASS-P belongs to any religious group (does not really matter), but sometimes churches have good access to social resources that elude government agencies. Even for emergency shelter. Sigh.....well, we need a girl on the beach to collect our starfish.

we need all of us on that beach. anyways, walter told me that sally army [salvation army in his street patois] is not so much a homeless shelterish place as a sunset drop-off place to sleep. one must vacate in the morning [and take all personal effects away]. so there is no place where he can get off his feet and let his necrotic big toe heal properly.

Thank you to all the WPers who have helped. I was concerned as I hadn't seen any threads by Ass-P for a while, and only noticed your thread this evening while browsing here.

walter hasn't been able to go to the public library [only place with free computers available to go online with] too often, I get the impression a lot of them discourage the homeless from visiting.

Just a reminder, there is a member accepting paypal on his behalf for the overseas people to donate.

When I used to go to the library to use their wifi I always saw homeless people hanging out there. There was this one guy that sat near where I always sat that had a bunch of bags with him. It was probably everything he owned.

Would it be possible at all for him to go somewhere else for a fresh start, possibly some place that doesn't hate the homeless so much and maybe is less expensive to live? Maybe get a room at the YMCA or a cheap studio apartment? He is on SSI, isn't he? What is happening to that money? He should be eligible for things like Medicaid, food stamps, and a free cell phone too.

I have doubtless not gotten the full global picture of Walter's life therein, I know he has to be on some kind of social security [don't know if it's SSDI or SSI] and has a beneficiary payee, and is also a contested recipient of some kind of inheritance, but he seems to not have much info regarding all this, like he is not fully in the loop regarding his own bennies. wish I knew more.

So, I've been looking at cheap caravan trailers, thinking maybe we could do a whip round.
Then he would have his own place.
But somewhere to put it -- all the parks want credit checks and rent history.
So it looks like that might not be practical either.

How on earth do people survive in the US if they fall foul of the system?

Homeless people suffer from multiple health problems at a rate far higher than the general U.S. population, yet the majority have no medical insurance. Once people become homeless, they have shorter life spans than housed persons, and are three or four times more likely to die prematurely due at least in part to untreated medical problems. So, not to put too fine a point on it, they simply suffer and die.

We do have state hospitals and clinics in this country where people can have free medical treatment and get free medication. Surely they have such a system in the US? I don't know much about it, but is he not in a position to receive any benefits from the new "Obamacare" health care system?

he surely qualifies for Medicaid but the problem is that he has no fixed address where he can just chill out and HEAL, once and for all. no fixed address where he can establish some kind of regular routine or health regimen. when you don't really know where your next meal is coming from or your next shelter from the elements, it is hard to stay healthy. ACA will not materially affect him. what will help him is regular housing. in seattle they have this thing going on with alcoholic homeless men, it is an apartment just for them that the beancounters figured out would save the city money in various ways. something like that [pragmatic compassion] needs to be extended to the rest of the nation. America needs to better take care of its own.

If, and it's a big task and complicated, but if you can get someone or a bunch of someones to help ASS-P, and he is doing okay and has a home; then at some point you might think about documenting this entire thing. Maybe it would prove to the (expletive deleted) politicians that help really is needed.

(Edited to fix spelling)

^^^
that is a dandy idea, but I believe the WP creator is probably among the very few here that are big enough in the grand scheme of things, to make it happen.

Alex doesn't post here very much and he's often very busy, but he does log in every day. Perhaps you should send him a PM.

P.S. How is ASS-P doing?

I have to post a reminder: if you're donating money to Walter(ASS-P), then PM me for my Paypal address.

auntblabby has contact with him and we will negotiate a place where he would receive the money. I gave him money before, several years ago, but it was easier because he lived in my city back then.

If there isn't going to be a serious donation sum within a reasonable period of time, I'm not going to bother driving 1.5 hours there and 1.5 hours back to give him some miniscule sum of money. Instead I'll just send the donations back to their originators.

I can understand you not wanting to drive the distance.
Apparently he can receive Western Union, which overseas members have trouble accessing. (Auntb has details)
Would it be easier for you to send the paypal donations that way?
