I stay up all night, every night, when it's cold, to tend the wood stoves, to keep my wife and children (human and non) warm and comfortable while they sleep.
During these nights I take the dogs out every 3 hours so my aging rescue, suffering from kidney failure, can relieve herself, and so that the others don't feel slighted. During the warm nights I set the alarm for every 3 or so to provide for our aging rescue.
I do this simply because I love, and it's something I can do as an expression of my love. They will likely never realise the why, because if it were just me, I would content myself with my warm wool blankets and my sleeping bags, and perhaps an electric blanket on low setting (more than enough for a single person. and then use the stoves only when I needed. But because they are here, I do this. I want them to be comfortable. I want them to rest warmly and safely. So I do it.
