my imaginary world...
Basically, General Creedon is a playboy and a ladies man. His best friend, Samuel Bukater, who is admiral of the Creedonian Navy is also the same way unfortunately. Peter's marriage to Ruth DeWitt ended in disaster after he caught her cheating on him with Sam. They divorce immediately. In 1890, Ruth and Sam marry and five years later they have children, who happen to be twins. One of those twins is adopted a month after her birth. Two years later, and they have another daughter. This child shows signs of autism and is diagnosed by 1906(In the Creedon Republic, autism was discovered in 1850). Creedon finally forgives his best friend and ex wife in 1895. The republic is set in the Victorian and Edwardian era, but has modern technology(The first M16 type guns appear in WWI, and we have Kevlar then)
Coincidentally, my characters use Victorian/Edwardian language (I can't compromise on grammar). But there are going to be computers and classical music and 19th century architecture. The cars used though are antiquated. Science is relatively advanced: they understand nuclear energy, natural selection and ponder over string theory. Society is strange in that autism is increasingly well-known. When I see the images, I think it is around late 19th century to Edwardian.

We have modern pick up trucks, GPS units, even though they all talk the way they did back then. The corset is very much in use on the women and even young girls, they start at about ten years of age being corseted. The men wear suits, and hats. A sign that you're the bomb is when you put a turkey or falcon feather in your hat. Popular mustache/beard combos are the Van Dyke(which the admiral wears on his face) For women, a small waist is a good thing. The bustle, which was popular from 1870-1880 is only mildly popular by the 1890's. A womans hat is something she takes pride in, and to lose it is almost an embarrassment. If perhaps you did something that was socially unacceptable, you would simply be "black listed" that is your name would be struck from the guest list at parties(The admiral had his name struck after his affair with Ruth). Parties are something legends are made of, in fact techno music is the predominate music at house parties. Rock music is also big, with bands like Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Faster Pussycat, etc.
Kids mainly go to boarding school. A school uniform for girls includes: A dark uniform, white pinafore apron, corset(if she is ten years or older), hair ribbons or bows, and a straw boater hat for summer and spring usage only, for winter, they have a wool hat, with flaps to protect their ears from the cold. Here is an example(sorry for the large size)
For guys who go to boarding school, they wear a polo shirt and nice pants.
College students basically act like they do today.
The family is a key element in Creedonian culture.
I ought to make a thread about my little world. I'd like to educate you.
I too have an alter ego and imaginary friends.
I once had characters from the anime series Hellsing and Trinity Blood as imaginary friends. I spent three years building a world based around them, focused almost entirely on their romantic relationships and children (which is a bit odd/out of character, considering the source materials were based around political unrest and vampirism). I eventually grew very tired of them, but I had a lot of trouble getting rid of them since I had a strong emotional investment in them. I also felt that all the time and energy I spent on them would be a waste if I got rid of them.
I spent months trying in vain to get rid of them including throwing them going-away parties and telling them I didn't love them anymore. I never killed them though, because I didn't have the heart to do so. I also tried to find new imaginary friends from different anime, but my search proved fruitless. All the while I feared that I was doomed to be stuck with imaginary friends whom I no longer loved. I experienced a lot of anxiety and sadness over this.
Then, one day in January, I decided to watch Edward Scissorhands. Next thing I knew, Edward had "moved in" and my old imaginary friends had vanished. I have since gone on to "adopt" imaginary friends from many other films, including Alice in Wonderland (2010 version), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005 version), Sweeney Todd, Sleepy Hollow, Pirates of the Caribbean, Cutthroat Island and The Princess Bride. Over the past 6 months, I have crafted an entirely new world along with a new alter ego to go along with my new imaginary friends, and I couldn't be happier.
Oddly enough, in this particular world my imaginary friends and I are caught up in a war with my imaginary enemies, when the characters involved would have been better suited to having romantic relations and children. That's exactly what I did with the Hellsing/Trinity Blood characters, who would have been better suited to fighting wars... Oh well. *shrugs*
Anyway, bottom line: I managed to change my entire roster of imaginary friends because I looked to a new medium for inspiration. Instead of tapping into ideas and characters from Japanese anime as I had done in the past, I began looking into live-action fantasy films, and everything fell into place.
Wow, it's always great to hear about other's imaginary worlds!
IdahoRose: I used to have characters off TV shows, from stories, or teachers at school I found particularly interesting. When I was very young, my imaginary world was like this underworld for the teachers at my school... where they'd all go after school finished, and they'd party etc. I then booted them out and had this group of corporate business guys, they got old so I got this alter ego who was just an average student and I made a family for him etc, then I decided his dad was more interesting so I adopted him as an alter ego, then I changed it about 5 times after that over about a year (I was growing up and very confused as to what I was, what I wanted to be, etc). My present alter ego is a council worker, but 2 of his friends were my age when I was about 15, so they lived with their parents, and went to school. I like their families and all but they no longer fit because..I don't go to school any more I go to uni, and I don't want to have random high school aged teenagers as friends because it's annoying and I'm 20! Most of their lives/stories are based around being at school. It's pretty hard finding suitable friends for my alter ego because he's single and i realised all his friends all have partners and it sucks because he doesn't have a best friend (which I think is really important). He's middle aged so being best friends with kids is a bit weird I guess, and I don't want him to have a girlfriend (or boyfriend) because he's very narcissistic and having a partner doesn't suit him. I suppose that's then main problem, he's outgrown his friends... they've finished school and left him, and I don't know who to replace them with. (He can still hang around with them but needs someone new). I made a few more council workers, but they annoyed me cause they had nothing to talk about apart from working at the council...
Vilette: sounds pretty interesting....I'll have to get my hands on brave new world!
Ackman: Your world seems a lot different to mine, just the way the people dress and everything. The only thing 19th century at all about my world is the industrial-ness of it, it has a bit of an industrial revolution feel at times. I'd love to read a thread about it, maybe I could introduce you to mine sometime?
Maybe you should have your alter-ego get a hobby outside of work, like joining a club. In real life, my parents are enrolling my brother in kung fu, in part because they want him to make friends. Since they announced this, I've been having a lot of fun imagining my alter-ego and imaginary friends as martial arts practicioners in an alternate universe. Perhaps you can have your alter-ego enroll in martial arts and have him make new friends that way? Just a suggestion.
That's a good idea, Idaho. However, something really horrible happened today.
1. I did a tarot card spread and the cards I got basically meant 'get rid of your alter ego, you don't need him anymore'
2. I realised I'm at the end of my 7th year cycle...(http://www.dreamhawk.com/7.htm) which means I'm due for a change soon.
This information is really scary, and making me really distressed. I really don't want to lose him but all the information I'm getting is saying 'you need to!'
Invent a new alter ego, perhaps? A new story, if you think your old one doesn't inspire you anymore. Or try writing new things in fragments rather than a whole. Then you can piece them up.
E.g. My ex-alter ego was a loud-mouthed impetuous young lady in the Edwardian era. I found her too modern so I decided on a fantasy world with modern tech and old-fashioned manners, and made my AE quiet and introspective. She was a Socialist and a bohemian, my current one is less political and more scientific.
Hope this helps. =D
Cad, Ackman, Idaho Rose, here's the thread:

Any one else with other existences are very welcome.

He does still inspire me...just the place he's in, the people he's with don't any more. Maybe I can just tweak them or tweak out the parts of him I don't like :/
