someone checked on him and he did not commit suicide on that particular day, but was feeling very down. i do not know of his actions since.

although it makes *us* feel better to check on suicidal people, it can have a couple of effects on the individuals in question.... some feel glad someone cared and embrace the assistance, and others feel ashamed/angered/cornered and are perhaps less likely to ask for help when they need it. it can go either way, and it is a risk. the member's silence does not automatically mean the worst.

I don't know why anyone would assume this person would be laughing. Maybe he put himself in the hospital. Anyway he sounded very serious to me, I remember when I was in rehab someone finished the program and relapsed immediately despite what seemed to be good prospects for recovery, Someone commented to me that "She had us all fooled." I don't think so and I thought it was an unfair assumption. I know every time I resolved not to drink again I really meant it. I hope this person opted for treatment and will take the steps to simply walk away from his hateful family.
