Music is one of my few things now when I've stopped playing video games and such. I just made an in depth analysis of my musical habits for a school subject this week so what I know now is that when I need to distract myself or calm down I listen to either type of music, calming or distracting to return to a kind of an equilibrium in the state of mind.

i admit here i'm a luddite. i just got me an mp3 player about a decade after everybody else and their brother got one, not to mention smart phones and such. anyways, i found much distraction and relaxation in loading my player with a portion of my voluminous music collection. also, walking around with this tiny thing in my pocket with the tiny earphones atop my head, is an amazingly distracting experience, in that due to the unexpectedly immersive sound quality, it is like walking around with a moving concert hall. i dare not walk out in the middle of a city with this device. but it sure is relaxing.
one of my special ed instructor sister's students chills straight away when you give him a CD player loaded with his favorite elvis presley CD, it is almost like a drug for him.
