"Jeremy" (can't remember who it's by--one of those '90s grunge-type bands) takes me right back to the hell that was grades 2-10.

Is it odd that there are songs I really like that are too intensely depressing for me to listen to on a regular basis? The ones that come to mind are "Shadow on the Sun" by Audioslave and "I Am a Rock" by Simon and Garfunkle. Then again, both of those groups have a very melancholy catalog with few, if any, happy songs between them.

Placebo - Running up that Hill
The sound makes me depressed. And I feel like a failure because things I haven't accomplished.

ColdPlay - Fix You
This can make me go into a anxiety attack, I don't know why.

Lisa Loeb - She's Falling Apart
I've never had anorexia, but I still recognize the feeling that nobody notices when I'm falling apart.

Pain - Same Old Song
Just gives me the feeling, that whatever I do whatever I change. Everything will always be the same.

James Morrison - The pieces don't fit anymore
I listened to this during my most suicidal period. I felt as though the pieces didn't fit.

Greg Laswell - Comes And Goes
Even though this song gives me hope I still feel alone by it.

Smile Empty Soul - Still Alive
This was my "anthem" whilst I was suicidal. It's hard to listen to now.

Howie Day - End of our days
From the movie 'The Bridge', it makes me feel depressed.

Suicide Commando - Hate me
Well, yeah.

Ouch - I had purposely omitted the Kix Don't close your eyes song from my list.... I was gonna put it but decided against it. I am not going to share why - as kids read these posts... but there is nothing good for me in that song...

Suppose this just means I am to confront my demons...

Reminds me of the first girl I fell in love with and when she ripped my heart out. Still love the song but can't get to the end.

Johnny Cash songs from the end of his life really touch me. Like, he's so vulnerable yet still strong. Especially the ones after his wife has died, and you can hear the knowledge in his voice that the end is coming for him too.
It's all about our fragility, and human suffering and about deep love.

There are other songs, that relate to specific people in my life, but to find them and post them would be a bit too much for me right now.

Same here Image I only listen when I'm depressed to remind me what other would go thru too.
my immortal - evanescence, for the same loss.
The Fray - How to save a life. If I had known then what I thought I knew then.
Verve Pipe - Freshmen

The songs list above hurt, all most as much as the song I wrote her. I wish that no one would ever remember it ever again, let alone ask me to sing it again.

thank you 2wheels4ever, IdahoRose, Aharon, lostgirl1986, Valkyrie2012, MjrMajorMajor, PastFixations, schizoid26, Mindsigh, outofplace, 47x, DrPenguin, Henbane, johnny77, mrsjohnny, marshall

some of your songs and stories brought tears to my eyes, but it felt good to connect with you - even in a sad way. it made me feel like i could understand other people's emotions a bit better by listening to some of the songs, while also knowing some of the stories.

lostgirl1986, we like a lot of the same music!

another couple of songs that are mom-related...

this is the song i was listening to when i got the news that she was dead. i was riding a bus. it got a lot of radio play around that time, and every time i heard it, i would be instantly weeping. that was brutal. i had never paid attention to the lyrics until afterward.

this one hits close to home because we did not ever fully reconcile after a big fight in 2008. we tried to get along but our relationship was broken. i don't feel like i could have stopped her from committing suicide, but i do think i could have reached out and made her life better before she died.

^^So many sad stories. :(

Lots of The Strokes early stuff, because it reminds me of someone in particular.

And various others that remind me of a specific time, peson or strong emotions.

Probably lots of others I can't think of right now, but since I've been feeling quite down maybe I shouldn't try to.

from the topic title i assumed that the question was "which music do you find painful to listen to" , and my answer would have been "no music is painful for me to listen to (due to my non understanding of it) . i do not listen to music i do not like"

but anyway, i do not really feel emotional in response to music. i am emotionally quite shallow i am afraid, but there are a few songs which make me want to look away because i feel sadness when i hear them.

in australia a few years ago, there was an advertisement that paired the song "i'll stand by you (by the pretenders)" with a video clip of abandoned and sad animals, most of whom would have died shortly after. i can not find the exact clip on youtube, but this one comes close (except it highlights dogs). i am saddened to see the despair in the faces of those dogs.
most seem to be begging for love. they want to be held and petted and to be taken home, and that is a very sad thing. they have little control over their destiny

anyway, in the australian ad, there was motion video of seriously sad scenes, and every time the ad came on i changed the channel.
here is an approximation.

i must congratulate whoever the bassist was in this song. he was very creative with his arrangement which i suspect he wrote himself.

anyway, it is a very sad song except it is sullied by a couple of things.
there is a line in the song where it says something like "when you stand and the crossroads, and you don't know what to choose" (i can not be bothered to listen to it again), and that is not appropriate to the context of the visual presentation because all the animals are caged and they are not at a crossroads and they have no choice at all.

the second thing that i am aware of is that the camera person who took the pictures of all those hopeful animals was someone who was able to make them believe he liked them, and i am sure that after he got the shot, he moved on. i think that he would not have adopted any of the animals he photographed.

another song i am saddened by is a song called "ben" by michael jackson.
it is about a rat that a boy has befriended. i like rats and mice myself (as long as there are a manageable number of them). they are inherently clean and the groom themselves meticulously, but most people compare them with cockroaches and ants and they consider them a pest. they do not know that a rat can love.

there are 2 other songs that makes me sad, but i will look for them later.
