No, I didn’t mean necessarily “to others”, and I don’t think yawning or yelping counts as speech—many animals do it. The real question is the one in the poll, as I tried to make clear in the first message; I just didn’t want to make the title too convoluted.

Since I live alone I sometimes dont talk for days at a time. I hate talking and now only talk when I walk over to my mom's apt. I have to talk to her. No way around it, if only so she doesnt feel hurt. Otherwise I go out in the halls of apartment or to store and dont say a word. I taught myself sign language so I can throw that on anyone who makes mistake of speaking to me. I never look at faces so I dont encourage communication. Online though, in writing, I am a word beast.

The longest I've gone is 10 days. Not including talking to myself when i was alone. I lived with my mom and went to school at the time, after about the 3rd or 4th day I started counting. Then my mom talked to me on the 10th day.

It is not at all unusual for me to not speak to anyone from the time I get home from work on Friday until I return to work on Monday. I rather like it that way, though if I go to the store over the weekend, I usually enjoy exchanging the customary scripted 2-3 banal sentences with the cashier. But nothing more than that. Just that one bit of conversation is enough to make me feel like quite the social butterfly, and pleased with myself that I could pull it off.

I answered the poll 2-3 days without talking to anyone or even myself.

There are times that I don't like to talk. I wouldn't say that it hurts, but it is almost like I get a headache to open my mouth and speak... almost, but different. I don't know how else to explain that.

If I could isolate myself and not be bothered, I bet I could go weeks without saying a word. That to me sounds like a vacation and relaxing.

Here at home, I have the luxary of being able to take the phones off and have the morning to myself and not have to talk to anyone. It really does make the day easier.

Like another poster, I type a lot and I am very thankful for emails, texting, etc.! I am working on my first short story to put on Amazon for Kindle. If that works out, I would be very happy to make a living as a secluded writer.

Oh one other thing I would like to share about not talking that I think othes reading this could appreciate.

Talking to NT's anywhere is very draining. I have to constantly remind myself about my facial expressions, body language, what they are saying, trying to ignore background noise, answer whomever I am talking to, voice inflection... and who knows what else I am forgetting.

It is all very draining!! !

Thank goodness for email, texting, etc.!

I tend not to talk to anyone for days until I go to the convenience store and say hi to the clerk.

There have been a couple of times in my life where I went without speaking from anything like a few days to a couple of weeks. Mainly because there was no-one to speak to.
