I have come to believe that you can tell if someone truly cares through the times of inconvenience. Is it someone you can count on to answer their phone in the middle of the night because you need them for some reason? They are also the ones that stick around when life is difficult. It is amazing how many people you lose simply because a relationship with them takes too much work.
It is about actions and not words. A person who doesn't really care may know how to say the right things, but they probably will not act on most of it. When I was getting divorced, everyone said I could go to them if I needed an escape. Few were actually there when I called them up on it. I didn't mind though. Those are the few I would want to be with anyways.
...and the ones who really care are the ones who miss you when you are gone, even when they don't need you...
