It’d be funny to watch Tim Horton play hockey.

You don’t seem to like the Canadiens much....

Of course I want to watch the Canadiens - just couldn't find any. All I could find was Toronto - but then again, all I googled was Bobby Orr so all I got was Boston. Even so, it was good to see Toronto again - did you know that Frank Mahovolich 27 got traded to Montreal and after retirement became a Senator?

Tim Horton? funny? uh ... it's a tragedy, did you not know?

I know Horton died tragically in a car accident in 1974.

I was talking about the irony of how few people knew Horton the hockey player (at least in NYC), but know, very well Tom Horton’s, the ubiquitous donut/sandwich restaurant.

We only have a couple in NYC. Many in Buffalo, though.

I know about Frank Mahovolich. He had a very long career. He might have been briefly a Ranger.

Who was your favorite Canadien?

Many French Canadians played for the Rangers and Islanders. Among them Jean Ratelle, Rod Gilbert, Mike Bossy.

It's the legend of Tim Horton. Players were lowly paid back - even stars only got ~$20,000. Tim Horton's coach (and GM?) was Don Cherry. Horton begged Cherry to buy him a car. After a long while, Cherry gave in and bought the car.

One night, the police found "the car" driving all over the road. They pulled up and recognized Tim Horton, asleep.

They did everything in their power to stop Tim's car or to wake Tim gently. Finally they resorted to one "whoop!" from their siren. That woke Tim in a panic; he tumbled the car off the road and died.

The police didn't tell Mrs. Horton; they told Don Cherry, who went over to Tim's house in the middle of the night to break the news.

Cherry blames himself for everything - if only he hadn't given Tim that car.

I hold this story in my heart, so do a lot of hockey fans in Canada.

Guess what. My Concierge just stopped by. He said, "Did you get my e-mail?" Well, no, I was typing to you. So I got his e-mail and I don't think I should send it, but it's an animated musical with him singing the lead. Softly. He said, "You're the first one to hear it." He's a nice guy, perhaps with a vocabulary problem. I woke crying today. I'm not getting over it. But he is a nice fellow who doesn't know that "You have to take care of your ass" is not the gentlest way of speaking. But it does sound rephrased; his usual speech is tougher.

I know Don Cherry was a long-time coach of the Bruins. He wasn’t known for his generosity.

He would have survived had the cop not used the siren. But one couldn’t blame the cop under the circumstances.

I used to think that the Canadiens were unbeatable. The Rangers always lost to them.

Do you remember the 1972 Summit Series with the Russians?

Two cops, in touch with HQ advice by radio, after having tried everything in everybody's training, all failed - they even tried to get his window open so one cop could crawl into the other and slow it or stop it or something. Believe me, fandom required explanations at the time. And Cherry grieved with us and told us there was nothing else they could have tried. I don't know enough about cars to tell you what they did, but the word back then was "everything." They spent a long time driving with him - they didn't just pull up and whoop. It's likely the cops were fans too.

Horton would have had a goldmine in his retirement.

I remember the name, vaguely, growing up. He played for the Rangers briefly at the end of his career.

When I first heard about Tim Horton’s, the restaurant, in about 2001, the name rang a bell.

I didn’t hear about it until I went to Montreal for the first time as an adult. My parents took me to Expo 67 when I was 6.

Horton never had a retirement. It was his Estate that created the eatery.
