He would have survived had the cop not used the siren. But one couldn’t blame the cop under the circumstances.

Two cops, in touch with HQ advice by radio, after having tried everything in everybody's training, all failed - they even tried to get his window open so one cop could crawl into the other and slow it or stop it or something. Believe me, fandom required explanations at the time. And Cherry grieved with us and told us there was nothing else they could have tried. I don't know enough about cars to tell you what they did, but the word back then was "everything." They spent a long time driving with him - they didn't just pull up and whoop. It's likely the cops were fans too.
