Freelance work for my tech disciplines would probably mean changing to work with more engineering, less fun graphics & more math, not to mention requiring a LOT more computers & gear than I currently own. I enjoy the technical process of working with big intricate graphical data sets & 3D imaging, that stuff calls for lots of machines plus big software teams.
People usually underestimate the personal investment it takes from me to do my thing; I don't blame you but it takes a lot of energy on my part just to fully consider what you're writing about. I tried to put together my own software business; everyone called me crazy, repeatedly & locked me in the loony bin yet again. This world quite simply would never let me run my own life at age 25. Had anyone actually supported me instead of just piggybacking off my ideas, I could really make some money on my own code projects. That said I have repetitive strain & sports injuries in my hands & arms so I have to take it easy. I'm sure I can get there eventually but I have a lot of work to go if I stand a chance. I put my entire life into these things since I often have little else to do.
