I would go into detail on this topic but I know it will be ignored. So the TL:DR version... Eat protein AND carbs together. Read up about calories in every single food you eat.

Check with real experts about nutrition and not some person who wrote a popular book e.g. Every now and then I'll e-mail the NHS or British Heart Foundation for clarification on a certain food or food type. They're very helpful and full of information.

Ignore food fads. Well, I managed to stop myself before I got into too much detail, though I'm sure the above will get ignored too. Bah.

I've read every post in this thread, including yours. There are some good advice in this thread. Although I can't give up coke altogether. I love coke, just like most people love tea or coffee (I don't drink hot drinks). I usually relax with a coke after work.

My boyfriend always says I'm not fat, but I think he might just be being tactful. I know men get fed up with women of all sizes complaining that they're fat, but really I AM fat. It's mostly my belly that's fat. I've literally been asked if I'm pregnant before.

It sounds like you have an apple shaped body, mine's pear shaped. I think having an apple shaped body means at least you can show your legs off still. I show mine (with black tights) even with thunder thighs. I don't care. I used to wear very short skirts too and didn't care.

Men don't like it when women ask them if they're fat, especially when asked to "Tell the truth".

Well naturally I'm meant to be a thin person. My dad's side (including my dad and his parents) all have very slim figures and are tall, and don't seem to gain much weight even if they eat and drink a lot. I've always been told that I've inherited that sort of physical build too, but in the last 4 years I've gained weight tremendously. Maybe I have my dad's figure (tall and skinny) but my mum's metabolism (slow). My mum's side are shorter in height and tend to put on weight rather quickly, even when they were children (although they are not naturally fat people).
I used to snack a lot when I was a child but I was always very skinny.

Another factor of weight gain with me is fear of wasting food. If I am given too much on a plate, I tend to eat it all because I don't want to waste any of it. When food is nice and hot I "feel sorry" for it if it has to go to waste and get all cold and rotten. I know there are some foods that you can freeze or keep chilled until the next day, but I'm talking about foods that you can't. Some foods can't be reheated twice or can't be chilled or freezed once it's been cooked.

Yes, I think food has feelings.

I don't like to waste food either. I cook single servings for myself so I can eat it all. I will make cookies and save the cookie dough to cook later. Then when I bake the cookies I'll just make a few at a time or freeze half of what I bake.

I'll also cook the same thing over and over again so food doesn't sit in the refrigerator and go bad.

Something about wasting food - once it is prepared, it is wasted already. There is nothing you can do to save it. It either goes in the bin or it adds fat to your body.

Or another way of looking at it - a pig has already died and gone into a ham sandwich. Whatever happens to that ham sandwich will never resurrect the pig.

The ham sandwich is already prepared and it is wasted as well if you consume it when you've already had enough food, because it isn't good for you to eat that sandwich and it isn't adding value to you by consuming it, so you're wasting it.

You don't need to give up coke altogether. It might just be a matter of having less of it. Maybe you go from having it every day to only having it a couple of times a week or something like that.

I think for you, calorie counting might be a good option. You could download an app like myfitnesspal and keep track of your calories. It'll give you an estimate of how many calories you need to stick to per day to lose up to one kilogram per week, and as long as you don't allow yourself to go over your calorie limit very much, you should start to lose weight.

Something else that occurred to me is that in your signature, it says you're on antidepressants, which are notorious for contributing to weight gain in up to 25% of people who take them. If your general diet's been the same since you started gaining weight, and there's no real explanation for it, and you started taking new antidepressants around the time you started gaining weight, it's quite possible that the antidepressants are to blame.

Yes but my (weird) mind believes that food wants to be eaten and become poop, urine, energy or fat.
It's a bit like a ball. I don't feel sorry for a ball when people kick it, because it wants to be kicked. That's what it was designed for. But I'll feel sorry for a discarded ball in a bin.

That's my "logic" (if you can call that logic..).

Ahem...I've got to be honest with myself here...

Yes the antidepressants might have something to do with my weight problem. I did start Sertraline in 2014, and after that I started gaining the pounds. Otherwise I don't think my diet has changed to what it used to be. My mum puts it down to age but I don't think you need to worry too much about your weight until you reach your 40s. And I'm not even 30 yet.

But I am scared to come off antidepressants. Before I went on them I found it hard to control my anger, and I would have outbursts that made me a nightmare to live with, and the only thing that helped was going on Sertraline. I'm afraid of the risk of coming off the meds and slipping back into my old ways, as having rage outbursts (or meltdowns) is a symptom of ASD and ADHD. I've been able to control my anger ever since I've been on them.

Do you have a scale, maybe that can help you keep track of your weight. There's been food that I was surprised that gave me weight like bananas and oatmeal (you'd think those would be good to eat).

Joe90, have you estimated your calories for a typical day and measured against your BMR?

If you still snack a lot I'd suggest dividing up the snacks into individual portions, perhaps putting them in small plastic bags so you can finish the little bags when you feel the need for a snack.
