I think the scientists are saying now that the vaccine will still have it's effect against COVID.

It's just that I'm trying to be optimistic but whenever doubts start getting announced on the news I start feeling anguished again.

Even if the new strain does affect vaccine effectiveness, the vaccine is still effective for the old strains. In that case we would need multiple vaccines to be developed for different sets of strains.

It just seems like the Brits cannot get a break. Not only are they dealing with a variant of the coronavirus that is highly transmittable but now a second one magically appeared. This new variant is linked to South Africa.

Britain’s Health Secretary Matt Hancock announced on Wednesday that another variation of the novel coronavirus has been detected in two people who were contacts of cases that stemmed from recent travel to South Africa. "And thanks to the impressive genomic capability of the South Africans, we’ve detected two cases of another new variant of coronavirus here in the U.K. Both are contacts of cases who have traveled from South Africa over the past week."

Hancock said the new variant is "highly concerning" because it "is yet more transmissible and it appears to have mutated further than the new variant that was discovered in the U.K." As a result, while researchers continue to study the potential implications of the variant, the U.K. has ordered new cases and close contacts of cases detected in the U.K. to quarantine, and placed immediate restrictions on travel from South Africa.

"Anyone in the U.K. who has been in South Africa in the past fortnight, and anyone who is a close contact of someone who has been in South Africa in the past fortnight must quarantine immediately," he said, adding that they must restrict all contact "with any person, whatsoever."

Pfizer has voiced confidence in its vaccine’s ability to protect against the first variant that was discovered in the U.K., citing the mRNA’s "flexibility."

I read that even if the vaccines weren't as effective against new strains, it wouldn't take anywhere near as long to update vaccines to work.

That's what they told whoever's been to China to do back in January, but 1 million+ cases later....well, here we are. So the lesson is, once it's on your country, no matter how much people who brought it into the country quarantine, it will still spread like wildfire.

Now I've heard that they're saying that this new strain in going to be even deadlier, resulting in organ failures in young, healthy people. I don't know if that's true or not.

South Africa? China?

Are people in the UK unaware that we’re in the middle of a global pandemic and they’re not supposed to travel ANYWHERE unless it is *absolutely necessary*?

The government seemed to have allowed people to go on holiday abroad while the restrictions were eased. I don't think anybody should have come in or out the country for this whole year unless it's for work. That's how this virus spread in the first place.

I'm just trying to be optimistic about the vaccines because I'm that desperate for a normal life, so that's why I get in a panic if there's doubt. My boyfriend is unemployed and hasn't been in a job for a year due to the pandemic and the fact that he's in the high risk group so has been let off looking for work at the moment, but he really needs a job soon.
Another thing is I'm tired of having to consciously try my hardest to keep 6 feet apart from others at work every day, which isn't easy at all. Nobody wears masks at work so even me wearing one won't protect me if others aren't wearing one, and I can't make them wear one. I'll just get called a "COVID w*ker". I wouldn't be such a COVID w*ker if I didn't have to protect my boyfriend at home, as I've got a very slim chance of getting too ill or dying from COVID (and I don't go out anywhere else to spread it).
Also the longer this goes on for the more we're going to see the economy go down the toilet, and more and more people are going to lose their jobs.
And it still feels kinda weird that seeing my own family is practically illegal now. I haven't seen my grandmother for a year now and she doesn't use zoom or all that s**t and she finds it hard to hear when talking on the phone, and so I miss her a lot. I miss all my family. I don't go on zoom either, as my internet signal isn't that strong so it kept cutting out when I did use it (due to money problems I've had to go for a cheaper internet package but it means a weaker signal).
Anyway, this zoom thing isn't the same as actually seeing people, especially your family who live in the same district.

I just feel restricted, emotionally claustrophobic even. Yes I'm still sticking to the rules and everything as I'm not a covidiot, but I'm not enjoying it. Yes I'm more used to it now but I still hate it. So that is why I'm holding my hopes out about this vaccine bringing the pandemic to an end next year, so that we can all get on with our lives safely. And when there's even the tiniest hint that this may not happen due to another big blow like virus variant or something, then I get into a panic again and need answers.
