I used to be afraid of thunderstorms because the thunder was so loud. That ended one night when I decided to watch one from our front porch. The storms usually moved from west to east and the porch was on the northeast corner of the house. It had screens to keep the bugs out. It also had a glass-paned door that made a sheltered corner. I moved a chair behind the door and watched the clouds, rain and lightning move by. Seeing the lightning helped me anticipate the thunder. I love watching storms now.

Have you tried picking up some books and learning all there is to know about storms and lightning? When I've been afraid of things I always took an interest in them until the fear was replaced by a fascination.

I think thunderstorms are one of the most beautiful things in nature. The anticipation of a storm is one of the most sublime moments for me. I love how the air gets that soft heavy feel, how the darkness settles in from one direction of sky while strange and subtle hues of light filter in from another, how the small puffs of wind feel warm and humid against my face, how the birds chirp in wait of rain, how the first soft peals of thunder commence overhead and flow towards the darkening horizon, how the first big drops of water pelt the thirsty leaves making them quiver.

I did fear storms at one point in my life. Now if I was struck by lighting I would die with a smile on my face. That’s how much I love thunderstorms.

Sorry if this doesn’t help.

I love storms and fear them. I like thinking of places to go during specific types of storms, like the subway or the morgue for tornadoes and hurricanes. I was happiest during an ice storm in Quebec and Ontario that killed 35 people. That was one of the best experience of my life!

I would suggest that you stay away from the windows. Try to find the quietest place in your house, & listen to some music that calms you. Also, listening to recorded T-storms at increasingly loud volume might help to desensitize you to the sounds.

Good luck!
