...The times I went to that Target (a specifically-designated " Ctiy Target " at that) was the first time I'd ever been in a Target , I've tended to " live " (if you call it that , ha ha ha :P) in these odd little enclaves of America that don't have many of the standard big chains the fact that I'm car-less probably has a lot to do with it-

Poor dear ASS-P, I wish he lived in the UK and then he could come and sleep on my sofa. I wish I could send him some money. I have been homeless and it's horrible. I do not have much money but could send him a little. If everybody on this thread sent him a little money, it would add up to a lot. I hope he gets a Paypal account sorted out so that we can help him. Poor ASS-P. :( Please update this thread or PM me if anybody knows of his Paypal account details or somewhere to send him some money. I haven't read the whole thread so not sure if that data was mentioned on earlier pages.

But I don't think we have Walmart in the UK. According to some quick Googling, Walmart own Asda (UK supermarkets) but it's not the same thing. How exactly could I buy him a Walmart card with US funds on it when I live in the UK where there is no Walmart and the currency is £ sterling?

Sending him gift cards is helpful I'm sure, if it means he can buy food and toiletries, but what he really needs is a house. I wish one of us was mega rich so we could send him enough money to buy a house. :(

I don't suppose he uses public transport a lot? Like buses and trains? I was gonna say you could probably get prepaid top-up cards for that sort of thing. You just swipe them through a reader on the bus or train as you hop on and off.

Well we managed to get him into a shelter for a while, then he got a little money so he's in a hotel now, but that's a temporary fix at best.

I don't suppose anybody has a room or place he could stay? I'd pay his way anywhere in the US to get him there if you do.

Or also any other idea of how to keep him off the street once his money runs out. Brainstorming anyone?

I bet there are people around the country who would be willing to put homeless people up, say if they have a big enough house and private entrance or maybe a garage apartment not being used - it would be good to have an organization to get donors and homeless people together.

That's a fantastic idea, wozwree. Please is there anyone in the US reading this who has a spare room? Or spare camp bed? Or even just a spare sofa would be better than him having to sleep on the street. I live in the UK so sadly I'm too far.

P.S. Dear Wozeree, thank you for helping him. I am so thankful there are kind people like you in the world. Thank you so much. I wish more people would help homeless people. I hope ASS-P finds somewhere to stay once his hotel money runs out. Poor ASS-P. (((((((hugs)))))))))

Here is a brainstorming idea: we could make a website for donations and send the link to everyone we know and ask them to donate and forward it to everyone THEY know to try and raise money. People make begging websites all the time for stupid things such as "Please help me pay for some new silicone boobs" or "please help me pay for a plane ticket to fly and visit my long-distance lover." Sometimes people make appeals that are genuine needs, such as: "I'm dying of cancer, please donate to fund my medical bills" or "please buy my amputee four-year-old some prosthetic limbs." Being homeless is a very urgent need. Why couldn't we make an appeal website on behalf of ASS-P?

To the rest of the world, he's just another homeless guy, but to us, he's a member of our community and we need to help him. My idea is that we could make an appeal website and then each make a YouTube video appealing on his behalf. We would need photos of him for extra pathos factor and also we would need his permission.

Is this a good idea? Would it work? I can't think of any other ways of raising money other than doing sponsored activities but I think the appeals website idea might be too ambitious. Any other ideas?

It's not a bad idea - but i was reading your suggestion about him being on someone's couch and I started thinking about it. I've never met Walter and I'm only dealing with him now under these extremely stressful (for him) situations -- but I really think what Walter needs is to be in a group home with supervision. He has some very severe health issues and some psych issues as well.

Maybe my original idea of an independent apartment would work if we could get him some kind of social worker to supervise, but living with a family per se might not work out. When he was in his shelter, his foot was so bad the other residents were complaining about the smell for one thing. He really needs medical help badly.

Could we all somehow lobby together to get him into a group home? I think he would thrive under those circumstances and maybe even be able to get back to school which is his dream.

Oh that's so awful about his poor foot. We need to help him NOW. Please if there are any rich people reading this, won't you send some money to help him? :(

Edit: what do you mean by "lobby?" In the UK I think that term implies some sort of mass appeal to political authorities. Is that the sense in which you are using it to apply to action in the US? Do you mean there is some sort of government-funded accommodation he might be entitled to? I hope there is. I wish he lived in a country where healthcare was free, so that he could get help for his foot. Aren't there any US charities that help homeless people?

Quote from Wikipedia:

Recently, the United Way has also placed an emphasis on eradicating homelessness with an annual Greater Los Angeles' HomeWalk. Kobe Bryant has hosted the walk for two consecutive years. In 2012, 28 000 walkers participated and raised $2.2 million to help fight homelessness and successfully placed 12 000 people into housing who previously were on the streets.[9]

Maybe they could help in this situation. They also apparently assist people to receivbe health care.

it should be mentioned that anybody noble enough to supply a room should not let his insurance company get wind of this.

I think the problem with asking for help on this website is that most of us (myself included) are so overwhelmed with the daily tasks of dealing with life and as far as I know not many of us are super rich, so what can we do?

Maybe I should go to the Right Planet website and ask for help for him! :D

Molly - we've been running around in circles with the charities. I think funding is being cut and other stuff may have been going on. He was in a shelter and they were putting him out. This would be so much easier if I knew anything about any of this, but I've just been calling people and some are nice some are obnoxious, but I'm on the east coast and he's on the west, so it's been hit and miss.

What I meant by lobby was if several people could call a place to try to get him in. I don't know if that would work, if we were all professional and nice it might make them feel like he has people backing him and he's good candidate, or it might just really annoy them.

I'm going to call the United Way MOnday though. It can't hurt.

That's why I thought we could make a website asking for donations. My idea was that the people we would ask to donate would not be restricted to the users of Wrong Planet, but just anyone at all who happened to be surfing the net. However we would need to come up with a way of directing traffic towards said website and (hopefully) making it go viral. How could we do that? :?

My only idea was that we could make YouTube videos of us each making a little speech saying: "hello, I'm an autistic person and I am making an appeal on behalf of a fellow autist who is homeless. Please would you click on this website address and donate some money to help him have a place to live?" But in reality I don't suppose that would work. Reasons why not: 1. All of us would be too shy to make the videos, and 2. the NT people wouldn't want to watch them.
