This is a pretty deep topic for me. about a year and a half ago my cat Sassy died of liver cancer. I'd had her for 12 years. (I was 24 at the time, so half my life)

She was the best cat I'd ever known. Always affectionate, knew when i was depressed, a good listener, always greeted me when I came home. It's been a while now but I still feel an emptyness, and sometimes look on my bed expecting to see her sleeping there. Knowing anyone or anything for that long makes them not just a pet, but a part of my life.

I still haven't found the courage to get another pet. I don't want to replace her. Nothing can replace her. I've been a person who enjoys solitude when I'm feeling overwhelmed, but she was the only one I welcomed in. Now when I'm alone I really am alone.

It is absolutely not stupid for a cat to be important. I love cats. I have a cat named Pixie. Cats used to be worshiped in the olden days. But as a former stepson of a veterinarian, I used to think putting an animal to sleep was cruel, but it is usually for the best.

I'm still getting over the death of my first Dog, Taffy. She was a sweet Dog.

And every time that a Neighbourhood Cat dies, I feel depressed on the Inside.

I'm sorry, Jetfox. Maybe someone will want to post something positive about their pet, too.
How is Kirby doing, by the way? I hope he's feeling a lot better.

well i've got some good news.

kirby is finally eating again though not much but we now know that he can chew food. he also seems to be getting around pretty good, he actually ran when mom tried to grab him so she could feed him. also the spots that they shaved on him are growing back. but he may walk with a limp for the rest of his life but he doesn't seem to be in any pain. he is slowly getting back to normal.

I've assembled a makeshift enclosure for my cats to be able to play outside without getting out onto the street or attacking birds. After losing Clooney two years ago, I've had to take that precaution. That's all I'll be able to do though...aside from the expense of having a permanent enclosure built, I'm in a rented house. It was hard enough finding a place with two cats! I couldn't be without them though.

Of course it is not silly to worry about cats or even dogs, rodents, snakes...any nonhuman companion in the house. I have four cats and one dog. Three cats from the humane society and the dog from the humane society. They were having a two for one sale on cats at the humane society, so I couldn't resist. They give unconditional love and it doesn't bother them if you are eccentric, an aspie, etc. When I am sick, 3 of the cats and the dog will lay all about me caring until I get well. They know when I am sad or lonely and come by me then, too. When I come back from a trip, they all get clingy and follow me all around. When I was very ill and had to go to the hospital, my dog stood over me and awake until I had to go. It is very heartening to see all the people with cats, dogs, pets of all kinds. It shows me the compassionate side to you all.... :D

Since so many people here have pets who are important to them, I wonder if it would be possible to add a permanent forum on pets.

My cat has been very sick and is at the vet. They don't think he is going to make it. I know that doesn't sound like a big problem to a lot of people, but my four cats are my best friends and this one is the most special. I didn't even realize what a comfort he's been to me. And he is such a nice cat that even my daughter who hates cats with a passion is fond of him. Is it stupid for a cat to be such an important part of a person's life?

My cats are my children and my best friends. My oldest is my oldest friend in the world. When he dies, a large part of me will die. I love him as much as any member of my family.

I think the loss of a pet-child is very tragic. And I honestly don't understand when a person isn't very affected by the death of one of their pets. It seems cruel and heartless to me.
