I HATE THIS COLD WEATHER!! !! !! !! !! !! !! !
I think you misunderstand, OOM. England has virtually zero native natural resources. Everything is imported, even much of their food comes from elsewhere. According to the article Joe posted, most of their heat comes from natural gas, which is imported thousands of miles. Natural gas also provides much of England's electricity generation. There is a shortage of natural gas. If the gas isn't there, it isn't there. The situation is similar to the gasoline rationing in the US in the 1970s. You can't run a natural gas pipeline at 25% or 50% capacity. Simply put, England is out of natural gas, so they're shutting people off.

The United Kingdom does have some natural gas deposits. According to https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/rankorder/2179rank.html, they have 256 billion cubic meters of proven reserves.
Across the Irish Sea, Ireland, has 9.911 billion cubic meters of proven reserves as well. I assume that that refers only to the Republic of Ireland which is not part of the UK and does not refer to Northern Ireland which is part of the UK.
I recently saw a reference to natural gas deposits on the Isle of Man which is also not part of the UK. Assuming the reference was not in jest, it would appear that their natural gas deposits are not particularly extensive.
England also has nuclear power plants. Sellafield was shut down in anticipation of bad weather.

Yes. I am not far from London and my area only just got access to gas around 4 years ago so people are slowly moving over but it costs a lot of money to change.
Just got a big old ugly oil tank in my garden that I need to get rid of now!

Yes, sounds like the right solution. Because of us exhausting earth until we dont get anymore ressources, we are additionelly poisoning her now.
Be it global "what ever everyone himself beliefs" Fact: Because of our doing, globale temperature is changing and with it the jest streams, that are causing our average temperatures around the areas we are used to live. The jet stream that is circling directly above the northern pole is this year much weaker, than normally. Because of it, it cant keep the cold air in its circle, so instead of circling above the northern pole, a great amount of cold air is "escaping" south, disturbing the jet stream above europe that should bring us warm air since march.
I agree that noone can tell us exactly, how our intervention in the global climate will end. I think this is the most important cause to stop doing so, until we know. People are dying because of us ignoring the simple wisdom: "First think, then act." Until we dont know, how we are effecting our global climate, we are not done with thinking.
The jet stream most of us are familiar with is pretty far from the north pole. I would never have guessed that there is another jet stream circling directly above the north pole.
There are more jet streams circling around the planet, from north to south pole. Depending upon the saison they move a bit from north to south and back again during the year. So during winter we are normally at the border of a jet stream that brings us air from north and east. Around start of spring, the jet streams should start to wander more north again, and so an opposing jet stream that has air from south and west wanders north again, bringing with it more warm air from the sea thats get itself supplied with warm water from the gulf stream.
(The jet streams are very high above us. So they are not "controlling" the temperature we feel completely, because even if there is a cold jetstream upon us, below around us can be warm air in another direction. But as long as you are in a cold jetstream you are more likely to have a tendency for cold weather.)
Since some years, the movement of the jetstreams during the year, as we knew, is not as before.
A comment to the discussion if we need global warming or global cooling. Right now we are loosing our moderate weather. The cause why everything is so wonderful green around us, is because we had "warm" winters that brought us much water reserves and helped the nature regenerate and "cold" summers that are not drying out the lands. Right now this is changing and we get more extreme temperatures and weathers. So more absolutely cold winters AND more completely warm winters with too less snow, both are damaging our surrounding nature because its not used to this kind of weather. Additional completely rainy summers or completely hot summers. Both are linked with each others. So to say, that we need more global warming or colding or whatever nonsense change without us even knowing what we do and the consequences, because of the cold winter is nonsense. You can increase the average temperature during the year about 2° C, but that doesnt mean we wouldnt have cold winters anymore. Sibiria is not only famous for its f*****g cold winters, but for its hot summers to. According to the average temperatures its a wonderful place to live. From my opinion i still rather want to live in europe, as we are used to, with a similar average temperature, but less extremes that makes it such a comfortable place to live. So as long, as we dont know what we do, we should better stop it and research in my oppinion. If we find out that global warming is as cool as people prophesy us, we can easily do it then instead of us simply acting now without knowlege and wait for what will happen.
Acting out of panic will be very, very, very expensive and will probably be largely ineffective.
If we are going to try to do something about Global Warming, it should be done only after we determine that action is necessary and with knowledge of what measures we can take that will actually be effective.

You dont get it. Its not about doing something. Its simply about stopping to do something without thinking. So we should act without thinking and do various changes without thinking of them that will lead to results we dont know. But to think if we simply want to stop to act and do no changes to keep everything as it is, and as we know it, we should carefully think about, because... it is so terrible to live an area with a moderate climate? Its so cool that people are starving because of our bad harvests around the whole globus, because of weather changes that lead to uncommon weather for all areas and the plants that grow there?
According to you, people should jump from bridges, and when they are done so, they should afterwards start to determine if the action of fixing a bungee rope to them is necessary. Sure, this is so much better, than starting the whole thing by thinking IF I want to jump from the bridge anyway, if I have an advantage from doing so, what misadvantages I have to face, if I want to face the misadvantage of gravity and if somethings like a bungee rope does exist
We are doing right now actions without knowing if they are necessary, and without knowing what measures we can take to be effective and without knowing the results. So when you dont know the result of your actions, that we do now without thinking, how the hell are you supposed to think about, if we should act against the results?
There is nothing to counteract we need to think of, if we simply stop to act without thinking. So not doing something is much simpler, instead of doing without thinking, and then start to think if its necessary to undo what you did without thinking, specially, when you dont even know yet if a possibility to counteract even exists, because noone can tell us what we will have to counteract. So how shall someone tell you exactly how do counteract the result of your doing, when YOU cant even tell him what results your doing will bring us?

We have plenty of capability to produce food. There is a common problem of it being in the wrong place. That's a transportation problem, not a production problem.
Surely you are more than smart enough to realize the idiocy of that argument.

Should we panic now because of our lack of understanding whether or not there will even be a problem in the future?
My sentiments. even when we dont have a log-fire or yuletide toast to get things under way their still seems to be alot of misery surrounding us right now. i wonder if its the black tuesday, black sheep or just the thatcher years that brought about this discord during peacetime or if its a stonger tsunami about to erupt over mount everest thtat even george osborne couldn't brave.
Moreover, i guess that our very own 'british weather' is a downpour over the many useless debates over whether the country will have a referendum or starve or maybe how budgets drive even the sanest of people to the brink of selfishness and suicide. Im under no influence of any other sabatical, apart from the fact i may need a brave naval officer to help me out with core duties even when this ship is not far from sinking.
Good luck to our naval and war heroes now, they're gonna need it.
In my post the word panic does not exist, you are the one using the word. What you can find in my post is the word thinking. Instead of panicking and running around like idiots, ruining our ressources because if we dont do it, then someone else could get the next useless media product, we should stop panicking about not having enough useless stuff, and sit down and think. So I dont know, but thinking is something that goes for me much better, when I am calm. If you are normally panicking, when someone is giving you the advice to think, then you should think about it. (Means calm down, gather your thoughts... DONT panick, it doesnt help thinking. )
So thinking means thinking. Panicking is the opposite of thinking, and its whats right now happening. "OMG, OMG, OMG, OMG *running around in acircle like a chicken* we dont have enough oil and gas to travel around the world for fun, drive 100km to the next outlet store and buy us 50ct bananas from the other end of the world.... OMG, were all gonna die!! !! !! !! Our precious bananas!! !! And our precious corean smartphones!! !! So oh my god, the new corean smartphones has a 12,36 mbit photocamera, and the old one only has 12,35 mbit camera! OMG, how could I live until now without this crap! Chinese sport shoes!! ! Were all gonna die if transport of chinese sport shoes would cost 2$ more, because chinese sport shoes are life important! And our precious pakistanian cloths!! !! By all means, we MUST find new ressources, we can burn, so we can go on producing and importing cheap products we throw away after 3 months or one year, when the next generation nonsense product is released!"
This is what is panicking for me. People are panicking out of nonsense causes because media tell them to do so.
