I don't think you said anything crude.
I use those words with my mum all the time and she's a pretty staunch Brit.
I wasn't even sure which words were offensive until I read the thread.

I guess you'd be a better judge of your dad's comfort zone than we are, but I don't see the prob.

Say sorry and be done with it.

You don't need to be British to not choose to swear in front of family/parents.

I don't see it as swearing, but each to their own.

I personally prefer not to resort to "4 letter" words but when I lose my temper it does come out (at least under my breath). So one of the metaphors used was "pi**ing". the actual metaphor itself relies on crudity (which is what I was alluding to).

I don't know the OP's father so not sure if there are other factors in their relationship, but judging from his response, his son's expressions can't have helped.

Rossall hadn't lost his temper though.
It was a polite email with a kiss at the end.

When I was seven I wrote a school story about going to the zoo and going "piss" in the toilet.
The teacher didn't even correct my choice of words.

I guess we all need to know what's acceptable or not in our family.

Yes.

I'd think it's more rude for a seven yo to use that word to a teacher regarding toilets than an adult talking about rain, especially when we say things like "taking the piss" as everyday vernacular.

My point is that it was never a big deal to use those words. Swearing directly at someone like telling them to FO might be different than using slang, but again every family is different.

Depends on the teacher. I had an ex-nun who worked as an English teacher and she was quite liberal with her use of 4 letter words. I think she found it liberating.

Again depends on the family. My parents were sticklers for pruning that behaviour from us kids.

Yes but this is about Rossall's family, and he seemed to think it was OK to write those words to his dad. Rossall is a grown man and I assume he knows his dad's preferences, so it seems like his dad's reaction was out of character or unexpected.

That's the point of this thread.

He is posing the question - is it reasonable?

Yes I know.
That's why I said my family talks like that and all families are different.
I assume Rossall thought it was OK or he wouldn't have said it.

I don't know if it was reasonable for his dad or not.
I'd have to know more about his temperament.

I won't email him again unless he emails me and I refuse to apologise for it. He's right in that I probably had a few drinks before I wrote it but I never get drunk. I have to live in council housing around people whose every other word is f**k or c**t or twat so he needs to lighten up a bit in my opinion.

Please.

The entire point is that Rossall communicated with his dad the way he has always done, and suddenly this one time his dad rounded on him for no apparent reason. Imagine for example, if you gave someone fish and chips every Friday night and they ate and enjoyed it, and suddenly one Friday they overturned their plate and screamed 'What is this? I'm not eating this crap!'.

This is nothing at all to do with swearing. Nothing.

Back in the days when the internet was someone whistling down a phone line, we had 'sealions'. A sealion was a type of troll who deliberately derailed a thread by picking up on an insignificant point (e.g. a spelling mistake, a word with multiple possible meanings, etc.) and trying to divert the conversation back to it at every available opportunity.

Might we try and stay on point, for the sake of Rossall, and for his dad?

Yes I'm OK thanks bb. I am a bit upset by it but I guess I'll just have to live with it. I made a mistake and hopefully he'll get over it and still talk to me.
