Basically, it’s more that Sly doesn’t want to pay for the insurance/maintenance of the car more than anything else.

It can get quite expensive to maintain a car while one is on disability.

Bus fare is much cheaper.

It’s expensive even while working full time. Driving, including car payment, insurance, maintenance, fuel, and parking costs me $900-1500/month.

As Retro said, sly could buy a combination.. solve the transportation issue first with an electric bike or something, then save $ on transit fares until he can afford the gun he wants.

Yep I’d have to spend all my savings(which isn’t wise) and I cant afford the monthly costs of owning a car. I’d have to save for 30 years to get a car not buying food and such. Then I couldn’t afford the $200 insurance for it

I feel the same way. I've saved a fortune since I sold my car.

The b***h is:

The USA is, for the most part, a car-dependent nation.

Mass transportation absolutely sucks outside of major cities (and sucks in some major cities).

Even in parts of Brooklyn and Queens, in NYC, one has to walk a mile to get to the nearest bus stop sometimes.

Work more hours per day at fewer days per week. In this way you can work the same hours per week but spend less hours communiting.

Where he works (in retail), THEY determine his hours, not HIM.

Not even I, a 38-year veteran at where I work, could determine my own hours.

Organize political action to prevent the bus route from getting erased

Attend city council meeting

Write letters to politicians

Petition

Ok. That was not one of my best ideas.

Sly has posted that his workplace accommodates his short shift requests. I’m sure they have some people working full 8 hour shifts.

Most probably work full-time where he works.

His company did modify his hours as an "accommodation." But they probably won't go further than what they have gone already.

Most companies just aren't flexible when it comes to hours. When they need you at such-and-such a time, they want you there at such-and-such a time.

Hours are down for others since January. Only managers are full time. Everyone else is part time. I can’t really handle 8 hours nor would they want me to do 8 hours in this position

How do people make a living then?

How can one make a living working part time at minimum wage----if they are not on SSI or something?

For most this is a side income. The rest are in school,retired/disabled, or spouse of someone working a good job.
Quite a few young kids working there seem to have their parents pay for everything so this is fun money for them. They drive brand new 2018 cars that cost $50,000ish no one working retail can afford such cars besides the managers

I'm surprised even the managers can afford them. Unless they buy on credit.

They probably lease these cars, or pay a "car note."
