I've applied to be a Samaritan which is a person who answers phone calls, e-mails and face to face meetings with people who want to talk about problems.

I've not heard back for a couple of weeks. I also applied to be an independent police custody visitor and was rejected.

I fear that because I've been honest about the fact that I've had mental health problems I'll never get any position. I'll never be of use to anyone. I'll be alone, pathetic, without love.

For now I have my professional cookery course to keep me going. In the future I might be able to be a chef. I also learn the piano. But neither will fulfill my ambition to form a meaningful connection with anyone else, I suspect.

Don't give up trying. I've been there, you know, doubting that you'll ever make anything of yourself. My job network helps people with disabilities get work. They've given me work experience, are trying to get me a job in the Christmas holidays and are helping me start up a photography career.
Don't give up hope. You'll make it one day.
People younger than me have had more jobs and serious relationships than me. You just got to keep on trying until something comes out of it.

Hi Perambulator,
Gosh what I know how you feel! Im pretty much in the same situation. I learned the hard way that beeing honest having mental health problems is not a good idea.
Now we should shut our mouths about it and play along. Otherwise we risk to be rejected, humiliated and treated like s**t before we even got the chance to prove we are able to DO something GOOD for someone!!
So be careful out there and bring on your strongest sides and improve them.

Dont give Up Hope!

Keep trying, but next time, dont volunteer information that is not directly asked of you...such as

Q. Do you have any mental health issues or other issues that may affect your ability...?
A.No.
Reason-If your issues may not or wont affect what you do, you dont volunteer the information that you have the issues in the first place if they have no affect on what you will be doing whatsoever. To volunteer unecessary information, you are opening yourself up to unwarranted discrimination. This is not lying, since you are not lying,...you are simply not mentioning something that is irrelevant anyway.

OR...if they ask if you have any issues without clarifying, ask them to specify what they mean, and is that question relevant, and why. After such, answer on a need to know basis and do not volunteer information that is irrelevant to what you are signing up for.Keep your answers short, simple, and vague, and only answer what they ask in a direct manner.

NTs tend to discriminate against those with autism, so if autism does not affect what you are signing up for, dont mention it.

Of course you'll be of use to someone, especially if you were to become a chef; people always have to eat, right? I'm going to study to become a chef starting in January. And there are always people who need volunteers; you'll find your niche.

I know just how you feel. It's not just mental. I worked for a doctor(she was a vet) who was terrified of me because I have epilepsy. She'd be asking me 'do you feel well?! !! !', and say 'you scare me'. I had to quit.

It did take me a while to find a job, but I eventually did, and I LOVE it. I'm a data entry specialist, and for some reason, the others in the department think I'm great, as I'm a fast typer, and get stuff done almost right away, and apparently, no one else likes this job. :? But it's a great job, and I love it. They say I keep the system very up to date, no one else has managed to do so before.

I guess it must be because I work best alone, and this job doesn't require that you work with other people much. Just the computer for the most part.
