DX'ed with OCPD and another personality disorder
I was preliminarily diagnosed with Asperger's but after talking with the psychologist she believes I have Avoidant Personality Disorder and Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder. There is sometimes an obsessive-compulsive component to AvPD and social phobia.

"There is a good likelihood that AvPD is the extreme form of Social Phobia. If you have AvPD you will recognize many of the characteristics of Social Phobia/Social Anxiety in yourself."
DSM-IV Criteria for Avoidant Personality Disorder (301.82)*
A pervasive pattern of social inhibition, feelings of inadequacy, and hypersensitivity to negative evaluation, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by four (or more) of the following:

2. is unwilling to get involved with people unless certain of being liked
3. shows restraint within intimate relationships because of the fear of being shamed or ridiculed
4. is preoccupied with being criticized or rejected in social settings
5. is inhibited in new interpersonal situations because of feelings of inadequacy
6. views self as socially inept, personally unappealing, or inferior to others

This describes me also.
Then I read OCPD wiki page and it describes me to a T.
Has anyone else here been DX'ed with OCPD?
My father has OCPD. I wanted to share than he actually recovered (maybe 80% better) for years by getting into a 12 Step program (Alanon and also ACOA). Those 12 Steps groups helped his OCPD enormously.
Dealing with the control issues is the key to getting the OCPD out of the way. 12 Step groups (like Alanon or ACOA or Emotions Anonymous or Social Anxiety Anonymous or clutterers anonymous, really most 12 Step programs will help OCPD a lot) The only thing I am not sure of is clutterers anonymous-- I don't know wether that 12 Step program has enough focus on letting go of control-- have never been to a group). Anyway 12 Step programs & groups are perfect OCPD since their whole focus is letting go of control as well as compassion for self and others (with the exception of CODA, I would not recommend that program to a person with OCPD because CODA isn't very compassionate, seems to have lost its focus).
12 Step groups (support groups) are also free and are (usually) very safe and supportive places to seek recovery. There is support but without judgement or pressure which is a good balance.
The only thing I would disagree with that the literature says about OCPD is the idea that people with OCPD only reach moderate levels of success in life. My father was a fighter pilot (for over 20 years) and was at the3 very top of his field. Also I have observed that the military is a magnet for people with OCPD. My fathers career was before he ever got help for his OCPD. In the military it was perhaps easier to miss or excuse his OCPD symptoms. I have noticed that in the civilian world, people are less tolerant of him/lessa willing to put up with his OCPD behaviors. BUt in the military a lot of his OCPD passed for 'normal'.
Lastly I want to say that people with OCPD are good people. My father actually was a very caring person. Very loving when his OCPD was not in the way.
I'm dx'd with Avoidant Personality on top of having AS. I have a feeling most people with AS qualify for OCPD or AvPD...it's just a personality type we're susceptible to. I'm curious, do you think you actually also have Asperger's?

Thanks for the reply!
I do not have OCPD myself but I do have social anxiety disorder.
I was never rigid about rules, and had really good social skills and a strong social network until my early 30s when I developed Social Anxiety problems.
I am not an expert but here is what I think--
1) That not all social anxiety is Aspergers (although some is).
2) That not all OCPD is Aspergers (although a lot is).
That may make me look like I don't believe in Aspergers, but thats not true.
I am convinced that Aspergers does exist, but that it does not describe every case of OCPD or Social Anxiety Disorder.
Those are just my thoughts. I could be wrong, but thats my take on it currently.
Best to all.
