Because when you consider genetic permutations, the effect of upbringing and environment, and the capacity for independent thought, humans are virtually infinitely varied. What is ambrosia to one is excrement to another. Such are the trials and triumphs of being such an individual sentient being.

Because even if you are good. someone out there will not like good people. Different people have different thresholds of 'goodness' before they say 'woah, what a goody-two-shoes' and walk right over you.

Sometimes, it's better to be a bit of an *sshole/b*tch to stop that happening and accept that at least some people like you and the rest can't use you.

If everybody liked the same things to exactly the same degree, there would be no motivation to create new things - all music would sound the same, all art would look virtually identical, all stories would be as predictable as romance novels  , and the world would become infinitely bo-rinng...

Not to mention we'd run completely out of all the stuff everybody liked. 8O

Or are you asking why no matter how well you do something, there's always somebody who can't do anything but criticize and complain? Because they're @ssholes.

Seriously, some people really do thrive on drama and negativity. But if we didn't have those jerks to measure by, we might not appreciate it when we met a genuine sweetheart.

Per Abaham Lincoln:

You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time

I always preferred the phrase, "I can only please one person a day, and today isn't yours."
