Addisons

Timmy is only 5 years old. His parents are retired show dogs. I wonder if anyone on his bloodline have digestive issues. I have aspergers so it's hard for me to understand when doctors even vets explain things. Majority of doctors are mean to me anyways which I don't know why. Anyone else knows about Addisons? Perhaps anyone here is a Vet themselves or owns a terrier breed? Timmy is my first ever dog. The last time he had diarrhea/vomit was August of 2009 when he licked off some curry off of our kitchen floor. But this time around he didn't get into anything. I took him to ER vet today and it was $191! The office visit for ER was $116! Then they injected anti vomit medication and prescribed Flagyl and gave him Hills ID can food for few days. I'm not fond of Hills, Pedigree, Purina, Eukanuba and such dog food sold at Petsmart or Petco. I feed him good quality food by California Natural which doesn't contain by products that can cause more issues with dogs. He has such sensitive stomach that California Natural is made for dogs with sensitive stomach. I used to gve him boiled ground turkey/white rice mixed with his dry food, but stopped doing that since August 2009. So no clue why he got sick again!

I am sorry to read that your dog is sick, I wish I could help...

I love terriers too.

Sorry to hear about it, at least you still have your dog, I haven't got mine anymore with me due to the fact that my sister had a severe asthma attack and we wasn't allowed to keep her for safety reasons. :( It sucks real bad.

Anyway's, hopefully your dog will feel better soon.

Do you know what the last food he was given before he became sick?

I'm not a vet and don't own a terrior breed, but I have a dog with similar problems (a Rottweiler) who lives on a diet of chicken and rice because it's the only thing that he wont vomit back up (apart from one brand of ridiculously expensive dog biscuits). He doesn't have addisons (well not that we know of) but he has always been this way, and once nearly died when he was 2 because of it. We don't know what's wrong with our dog but I know how you feel with having a sick dog, it's terrible not being able to ask them what hurts like you can with a person.

All I can suggest is that you try to find an online message board about dogs with addisons - get some advice from people there because they will know more. You can go to your local library as well and find books about it, or go back to the vet and ask for a better explanation.

I also just found This Page about addisons disease in dogs. I find it easy to understand so hopefully you will as well. I read there that with the right treatment, the prognosis is excellent. That's great news. :)

He's doing ok. He is on antibiotics. He has had 6 episodes of vomit/diarrhea since Oct 2008. My parents and I got him when he was 9 months old in August 2005. He was supposed to be a show dog, but he has a minor flaw. The primary vet said that he doesn't really need a blood test to see if he has Addisons. Addisons tends to run in poodles and in older female dogs. Also the blood test for Addisons is $410! He did have a complete blood count in the fall and everything was normal. My other concern is IBS or pancreatitis. But he would be sick more often then. He's going to be 6 in November. I do hate it when no one is at home for 8-9 hours a day. Does anyone crate their dogs? I may just do that when no one is at home. I work full time, and so does dad. Mom works part time, but sometimes she has 8 hour days. Or I can put baby gates and have him confined to kitchen and family room. Whenever my parents go out of town, I just work half day and get home around lunch time so that I can take care of Timmy. He is a Westie and Westies love attention. I wish I can find a job closer to home or work from home. He eats the Hills ID can. At least he is eating. He is also playing like he does. I just hope he isn't seriously ill. I do want him to get tested for just about any disease. If I were ill myself, I would want to get any tests too. A co worker feeds her dogs raw food! Does anyone feed their dogs raw??? She has Samoyeds. She says raw is better than kibble because it's all natural. But raw isn't cooked! I'm sure during the Civil War people fed their dogs raw, but now we have kibble.
