Emily passed away Saturday night (5/22) around 9pm. Emily was my aunt's 13 year old Norfolk Terrier. She was a finished show champion as well, as all of my aunt's and uncle's dogs were. My aunt, my uncle and my one grandmother came to visit us from New Jersey. It's about a 4 hour drive. Well Emily was panting all day Friday and part of Saturday She had congestive heart failure among other things. She was on Lasix and Nitroglycerin ointment that you put around their ear lobe. I don't know much about heart issues in dogs, but I do know Emily had an enlarged heart. She had an autoimmune disease as well. She loved to give my uncle kisses on his nose. Emily was my uncle's girl. Lasix made Emily pee a lot and drink a lot of water. She was fine up till around 8pm Saturday. My uncle took her out to pee, then put her back in her crate. Then all of a sudden Emily just fainted on her side. We thought she died. So my uncle quickly took her in his arms to try and revive her and my aunt gave Emily that Nitroglycerin ointment in her ear lobe. She came about, but not good. I took them to the ER vet about 15 min from our house. I thought Emily was going to die in my car. She was gasping for air, just trying to stay alive. So the vet quickly took her in the back while my aunt, uncle and I waited in one of the exam rooms. Emily was in oxygen cage. The prognosis not good. She was 13, was going to be 14 in November. So Emily could have been in oxygen cage all night, then my aunt and uncle would have picked her up on Sun morning before heading back to NJ. But what if Emily were to pass in the car? So my aunt and uncle decided to put her to sleep. My uncle wanted to see his girl be put to sleep but changed his mind and told me that we should leave. So I'm sure by the time we got to my car Emily was gone. I miss her so much. Emily wasn't my dog, but she was part of my family. I have a dog too, a Westie, but he's only 5. Thankfully no heart issues that I know of. But I said my good byes to Emily and she gave me this look as if to say "Anna, I will be fine." All day Friday Emily kept on staring at my aunt and uncle. You can tell in her eyes that she was in pain. My aunt and uncle had to go back to NJ without Emily. They do have Max, but since he hates to travel he's over at a friends. Max is 15 and is Emily's dad. I can't believe Emily almost died in our kitchen and in my car. How can I cope? A living breathing animal nearly died in our home.

My aunt wanted a simple box where Emily's remains would be with Emily's name, birth date and death date on it. The pet funeral home will actually mail the box to my aunt's and uncle's house in NJ. At first the funeral home would send it to the ER vet, then I would have had to pick up her remains and leave them at our house. How awful that would be? I miss Emily. RIP little girl. I love you and will always love you.

It's been nearly 2 weeks now. Someone told me that I shouldn't feel sad over someone else's dog. That is rude and cruel. Emily was my aunt's dog. I have seen Emily since she was only 3 weeks old. My aunt is a breeder and participates in dog shows. Some of my aunt's friends are sad over Emily's death too. She suffered for so long. My uncle is still taking it really hard. Emily was his favorite. So Max seems lost looking around for Emily. Max is going to be 16 in Jan and is Emily's father. Poor guy :( He can't see too good nor hear too good. :(

Some people can be so nasty. A dog can't hurt you, the way that a person can.

R.I.P Emily. Animals are so simple, so caring. Humans aren't. May she go to a world that will be better for her and may you one day go with her.
