I Dont like this generation.
I hate the way we are now, with all technology, and greed. How everyone has to have the best thing, before anyone else, and all the company's thinking of bigger and better ways to get people to buy there products, example the iphone 4g, I dont understand why they had to make another one, iphone is still like the top seller of touch screen phone yet apple just needs MORE money, so they came up with this stupid thing. Same with there songs they start charing like $2.00 for one song, when it used to be 99 cents.
And social networking and texting, these things i CANNOT stand. Mostly because I dont feel like a typical teenager, i feel like an older person. I prefer having a book and not a device that holds my books, I prefer making phone calls, I prefer writing a letter and sending it through mail rather then using email. Kids are texting 24/7 and cannot put down there phone to save there life. And facebook, I was looking at my sisters friends list and some peoples are public and it says "going to the lake with so and so! txt me!" its like seriously? your at the LAKE, why can't you put down your phone and go do things your supposed to be doing at the lake. but instead they have there phone and there like "jetsking!" or "eating a sandwich!" who CARES???? omg i am just so annoyed. Also has anyone seen that commercial for the KIN phone? At the end of the commercial they are like "the first phone to manage your social life" SERIOUSLY? SERIOUSLY?
I want to go live in a cave, up in a mountain.
I'm currently reading the book, "The Narcissism epidemic".
It's about "generation me", and how technology and consumerism has caused people to be very selfish, self absorbed, superficial and less empathetic to others.
I recommend it.
It's backed by a lot of scientific studies.
I mean it's easy to say "Gee, kids these days...whats wrong with them?!" but this book actually provides evidence for the actual cultural changes that have taken place.
It is my belief that all this "instant gratification media" is making people think poorly, and more shallow.
People don't sit back and appreciate anything anymore. They have short attention spans, and are always thinking about facebook, twitter, etc. instead of being "in the moment."
And too many people believe that they are special, the world revolves around them, and they NEED electronics, fashion, and STUFF.

Kat: I am of that older generation and while I generally hate popularity...particularly when things I like become popular; alternately exploited and ruined, but I must say....
I like e-mail and texting. I generally don't want to talk on the phone and we get a new mail carrier around here every week, none of which seem to be able to read addresses.
I would also like an eReader. I often have to consult large technical manuals and I hate carrying them around.
The iPhone 4g thing I don't understand.
I am a mix.
I love books, but mostly happy kid books.
I like my dvds and I like to edit video and
make my own dvds.
I am not into twit and fartbook.
E mail is ok, when I want to send a quick
message, but I'd rather talk on the fone,
on my PBX system than type.
If I go to a lake it is so I can slosh around
in the water and throw rocks in it and
hock loogies at the grass hoppers, not
talk on the ham radio or cel phone.
I hate throw away technology, I want to
fix it and use it MORE if it breaks,
I won't "buy a new one" will I fix it
and use it longer than they want ome to,
oif they desine it to break apart when
I try to fix it I will MacGyve it and make
it work anwyay or complain loudly and yell
ripoff or both or fix it then boast about
it to their customer service dept, not meanly
just saying "Hey I fixed the cd player and I'm not going to buy a new one ha ha!"

I share your opinion. I like to be up front, not use a friggin' machine to do things for me. Machines should not be used for anything useless like this. I understand when you need to use a computer to communicate with someone really far away though, like over skype. I wouldn't be able to talk with Helixstein over in New Zealand without skype.
You know, I hate it when people post meaningless things on their facebook every five seconds and get tons of comments that are usually irrelevant saying things like " Love ya Trish <3!" and stuff, and when I post something extremely meaningful, no one cares. It's because I'm not popular of course.
And regarding the whole upgrading things every year to get people to spend more money, that's why I don't even bother. It's the same for phones. One mment, you'll be the cool kid with the new phone, the next, your peers will be laughing at you with your old ghetto phone because it will be outdated. What's the point of spending money on a friggin device if the new version comes out every 6 months?
And regarding apple, I have never trusted them. Steve Jobs is Lucifer. Isn't the fact that he also works for Disney proof enough?

I don't care about today's generation, either to tell you the truth, but you probably already knew that, already. Today's youth, most but not all, seem to be self-absorbed, and they hate anybody who's different from themselves. They only care about how many gadgets they have, and the year that they were made. The newer, the better. They don't see any use of listening to the music of a dying generation. They have to be exactly like their peers, in every way. I like the youth here, on WP. You guys and gals aren't like that.

I have a facebook that i visit once or twice a day for two minutes. I update my status...i donna, every two week.
I made one because i'm horrible about keeping in contact with people
I'm one of those weird girls who goes to the beach to play in the ocean not tan and complain about how hot it is.
I gave up on music targeted toward the masses a while ago.
I like a phone that can make calls and send text messages. I don't need a super duper IPhone.
Basically, i don't like this me generation and i'd love to read The Narcissism Epidemic as well. We're almost the opposite of the hippie generation in terms of seeking real individuality. We all want to have individuality these days in the midst of a growing and more connected population. It's like what's cool now. "Oh, well i like Lady Gaga and listen to indie bands like Kings of Leon so i must be uuuuuber cool. I haven't updated my facebook status in an hour! "

These things are NOT NEW. The technology may be, but the behavior itself sure as hell isn't. If your parents, or even your grandparents, tell you that they didn't want whatever the latest thing was when they were teenagers, and that people didn't used to be greedy, they are big fat liars.
Every generation is like that.
If you don't want to see what people say on Facebook, may I suggest not using it yourself?
Same goes for e-mail and the iPhone 4. Just don't use/buy them, it isn't hard
May I remind you, though, that you are on a computer, using a social website, to post this?

I love books and being present wherever I am, but cellphones and email helped me be close to my family for ten years when I lived far away. They helped save me from worse anxiety and depression. Everything's got its use and moderation is important. I feel lucky to have it.
We used to have something called a party line, which is when the house phone line is shared between neighbors so you'd pick up the phone and accidentally interrupt a neighbor's call, as if it was just someone else in the house on the phone. You couldn't make a call until they got off. And when I was a kid in Panama, I'd get to talk to my dad and grandmother maybe twice a year and because it was an international call to a third world country, there was an operator who would listen and switch the incoming and outgoing signal as you talked. So you'd say, "Hi granny, I miss you so much!" and then you'd have to say "over" and the operator would switch it so granny could talk. It was stilted to say the least. Your words could never touch.

Another thing that I don't like, is that for the first time in history, grownups are afraid of youths. It's been the other way around, for many centuries and decades. Now the tables have turned. I don't want to be out there, walking to 7-Eleven for a Slurpee, by myself, past 6 in the evening, whether it's winter or summer.

I'm Generation X, and when I was in HS the hot thing was a toll free pager, and there was a computer lab with old Mac computers instead of a computer for every student. I graduated HS in 1993, and college in 2001, and then went back to trade school in 2005 because my degree was worthless. In just four years, everything had changed. Kids texted all through class, and classes with a PC for every student had kids watching Youtube and rap videos and IMing their friends instead of paying attention. I saw none of that in college.
Kids nowadays were raised on "self-esteem education", and their whole childhood was people telling them how special and wonderful they were, so they are totally unprepared for the world they are facing and will face in the coming years. They are all about RELATIONSHIPS, and need to be texting and talking and getting praised all the time. To them, that IS work, not the other stuff where you actually have to accomplish something. They think they should get paid for being social all day, and being wrapped up in their dramas.
That's why employers are frantically moving jobs overseas, because Johnny will call mommy if he gets a poor performance review, and he thinks it's rude to interrupt him while being social and asking him to, you know, WORK. America is no longer a nation where we can pay people for doing nothing but being social, we did it for a while on cheap Chinese credit but that's gone now.
Kids today will be 40 and living in slums and fighting over food scraps and wondering what happened, they did all the "right" things, got college educations in the right subjects (colleges are more like diploma mills now, kids party all the time, come to class drunk, and still get straight A's) and participated in all the right activities, they did everything right, but their lives still went nowhere, they live MUCH worse than they did as kids, they don't have money for the STUFF they feel they need to make themselves whole, they see other people in other countries getting STUFF and can't understand why since they're the most special people who ever lived. It's at that point that you'll see riots and even a revolution, and the first guy to come along and tell them how special they are will be the leader, and he'll be very evil.
This is an ACTUAL post from a nearby Craigslist rants and raves board where people whining about unemployment checks running out has been the hot topic. This is an entire CITY! Scary! This is the future, people, so don't wonder why you have no job even though you are uuuuuuber special. The name of the city has been deleted.
The Whole Unemployment Thing (X)

The problem in X County is not so much the unemployment rate, it is the fact there are no qualified candidates to fill the plethora of managerial positions. Point-in-fact: As the Hiring Manager for a major retailer I am simply flabbergasted by the applications that come across my desk. Things have gotten so bad that we have now been instructed to have job fairs in the (XX, nearby metro area) area in order to compile a roster of candidates to interview for our openings in the greater X area. Of course our company pays all moving and relocation expenses. It seems (generally speaking) that this area is made up of functional illiterates. Most applications are filled out wrong; spelling is abhorant; background checks result in "red alerts" and it is never a good idea to go into a store looking for a job dressed as of you're heading for a day at the beach and calling the manager "dude." Matter-of-fact, some Hiring Managers have even gone so far as to instruct stores not to post "Now Hiring" signs and stop taking applications and have decided to simply recruit from other businesses and areas. Also of interest, many companies now include IP Address checks in their background investigation and in many cases that will exclude an applicant.

"Dude, I'm so uuuuuber special that I live in a slum with my three kids by three different men and spend all my money on STUFF I really NEED rather than on food for me and the kids! How DARE they not hire me/cut my welfare?" I want to move to Brazil. Anybody willing to sponsor an immigrant?
