It's just weird that I have to ask this. I like sailplanes, and where I come from, they don't have it. And my mother is annoyed with me browsing pictures of it and watching gliding videos on Youtube. I stay up late in front of the screen, watching the videos, imagining that I'm in the cockpit, and my mom hating me for the use of ear phones to lock myself in my beautiful and perfect little world. I don't understand and don't know what to do. All my friends at school are all interested in multiplayer shooter games and soccer and all that stuff, stuff that I find boring. And I can't seem to find a middle ground anywhere!

I am sometimes angry at mother nature for making me having a fixture on something everyone else is not interested in...What can I do? I can't move countries yet.

My advice is to just ignore people who voice any dislike to your interest its just there loss not yours, its a fantastic interest no-matter what other people think if you let others talk about what they like they have the obligation to listen to you, plus you can always join clubs, forums and fan sites for Sailplanes I ashore there should be at least one and even here on Wrong Planet you could write a blog or start/join a discussion on them. Unfortunately I'm not absolutely shore what to do about you're mother I myself have the same problem with my older sister.

Why should your mom care if you are interested in sail planes?

I'd much rather my child, if I had one, be interested in that than all the horrible things that children today are interested in.

I'm glad that I've rediscovered my special interest, in September, last year. It's the best one, that I've ever had. The most expensive, but the best. :) I don't really wish to be interested in the things of today's world.

Try not to let the fact that others don't appreciate your interests stop you from enjoying them yourself. If that ever happens you might become depressed. The world has a way of doing that, stealing and pathologizing our only pleasure in life. I wish NTs realized how cruel this is. You have to fight it.

It's a part of being an ASpie.

You think people discuss Ferraris with me ???

I just had to go and watch a youtube video of sailplanes, it sounded so peaceful and great.

It isn't even my special interest, but I enjoyed watching the sailplanes gliding around gracefully.

Sounds like a great special interest to me. Thanks for sharing it

My guess is that it's less the gliders that irritate your mom and more the staying in front of the computer all night. Can you move your interest into something more concrete? Maybe get a miniature kit to assemble and fly, or locate an enthusiasts' group where you could learn even more and maybe have an opportunity to actually go up in a full-sized one? This is one of those special interests that could turn into a real career.

@pschristmas

Unfortunately, Thailand has no gliding, so forget it. I might get an RC one, but I don't know. And I doubt if I can turn this into a career, it's more a hobby. If you take a look in gliding competition websites, and look at the pilot's profiles, they don't glide for a living, they're mostly engineers, airline pilots, etc... They need high paid jobs to do it. And as for me, the subject I'm doing in university isn't going to get me a high paying job.

They do look awesomely cool :D I never even knew they existed!

I know it's no where near as cool, but on a related subject how about hang gliding ? I'm sure that's a much more affordable thing to get into, and hopefully in the future the opportunity to make the step up to sailplanes will present itself in the future.

That's actually the kind of thing I was thinking of. Those pilots and aerospace engineers all started out as kids with an interest in flying something. I used to work for an aerospace manufacturing firm and most of the engineers I know are still big kids, just playing with bigger toys, now. :D

On a smaller scale, someone has to design, manufacture and sell those RC kits, right?

 It was just a thought.

Sorry, I do not like Hang Gliders, unless it's "Aeriane Swift'Light"

And even that is expensive! Like sailplanes, Thailand has no hang gliding. They have paragliding, but I hate that too!
