I would have to face how bored I am.

I cant. I have tried. But the boredom is too much.

i wish to remind people that I am looking for helpful, supportive answers, having posted this in the Haven, though i know that doesnt show up if someone enters this thread from the introduction board. I am hoping someone understands where I am coming from enough to perhaps offer suggestions, or good advice.

Don't quit the internet if it's your hobby.

Yeah zen i know where you're coming from. i just don't have much of a life, without TV or the internet. i tried to give up Tv but I'm just too bored without it. Just sitting around and over thinking things is worst than being in the firing line of all those ads wanting me to buy things. Same with the net. I tried spending less time, but it's my only avenue to social interaction (ie not thinking of myself). So i wish i could say do this or that, but unless you find something that's a positive influence on you and that which takes a lot of your time, it's very difficult.

yeah i think i'll just echoe what ferdinand is saying, if you enjoy using the internet there's no need to give it up completely. however, if you feel like you spend too much time on it or something, maybe you could try to limit the time you go on the internet per day? like one or two hours a day or something?

sorry if this post seems kinda obvious but its all i could think of that might help :)

You're probably a lot like me, when it comes to the Internet. If you love something that much, you should keep engaging in it. I don't quit the Internet, because I know that I'll just be on later, or the next day. Do what makes you happy.

its an addiction, so much of 'modern life' is, habits, distractions.

Why do you think most people are unable to keep still, their waking hours dominated by this compulsion to occupy themselves all the time? Look at an animal, if you have one, they have something most of us have lost - they can be still!

It Will be hard at first, youll feel bored, restless probably find some other meaningless habits to substitute the tv/pc etc. but if you can get through that, you might just discover something wonderful on the other side. take a cue from your username - you must have chosen that for a reason, an aspiration? :)

im preaching mostly to myself here btw!

Do you have to quit the internet completely? well thats a personal thing - i suppose it might be a good experience. But remember that the internet itself isnt a problem, its not an inherently a bad thing so if you just cut it off without evaluating whats driving it, you risk forming the same patterns again with a different activity.

yes, I guess it is my hobby. But the problem is, I dont process it very well. I have poor muscle coordination and slow eye tracking speed. If the internet was audial and I could type via voice recognition, that would be good :) . But the way it is now I cant keep up with it without stress.

Firstly, I like your new avatar! it is making me want some smarties.. :?

But yeah, you pretty much hit the nail on the head. I have tried cutting down internet time- TV too- and all that is left is to read books, because otherwise there is nothing to do.. I can sometimes find hobbies, but my social life is extremely limited, so it is my only outlet of interacting that isnt with my boyfriend, his family, or the animals...

To right-hand-child, CockneyRebel,

Thanks for the supportive messages. :) Yes I know I am getting positive things out of using the internet. If I wasnt having the problems processing it i would likely be on it a lot more... :) I dont think i spend really excessive times on it, (asI did when I was an office worker), but the times I do spend on it make me feel tense, wired and overloaded.

Yes, this is true, people are becoming busier. lately i have been trying to do nothing more, ie lying in bed longer and trying to find ways to be idle, it is not easy though...

yeah about my username, i actually came up with that in 2005 back in the days when i was meditating and into Buddhism, i still am in a way but now I realise that being Zen was a lot harder than it looked and lent itself to certain personality types. But not mine.. i am so easily wound up, upset or overwhelmed. Even when I try meditating a bit, my personality remains the same..

I know it is nott really about the internet though, more about the way my restless brain works....

i know that it is in general since i myself am on here just about every day, but i'm just curious about your particular views on the subject

Um, I am not sure. From what I have read about addiction, they come hand and hand with allergies. In other words, if something causes some sort of pain to the body, or inflammation, or difficulty, the body sends out pleasure chemicals and pain-killing chemicals. This is one reason why the foods that are the worst for us taste the best...

So the fact that many people are addicted to internet, their cellphones, and other media, could be because there is some pain, tension or stressful process going on in their body or mind.

For me i think I am overloaded by computers. I get sore eyes and head reading the screen, and also typing each key out is quite a strain for me.

Also, if I see a number of threads I like there ends up a sort of car crash in my head where I feel compelled to post in all of them, and an even bigger one if i write a number of posts and then people reply because then i have to reply back, and I have to go track down the threads and that in itself is stressful...

I crave internet when i get up in the morning and if I am really bored and have nothing to do i cant seem to stop reading it... and eating... :?

it is the worst at night because I am at my most bored and also tired and strung out from the day and I cant relax so therefore cant stop surfing the net. The only other thing to do is watch DVDs.
