(Forum subject field's too short... I despise typing like that)

Although it can't help me at the moment given my current situation, I'm a person who likes to help folks out and this is a very helpful tip for those who are depressed and are having difficulty getting out of a rut. It has helped me greatly in the past. I'd even recommend sticking this thread.

Is there an inexpensive or free activity away from your home that you enjoy and can use to relax and even if it doesn't temporarily remove your hard times off of your mind, you feel comfort that you are enjoying that particular moment?

Set one day a week (even spread them out further if you desire) so that you are almost guaranteed to consistently have something to look forward to. Trust me, it makes a difference.

When I had the money and a bicycle that wasn't frequently getting vandalized at my job, I used to spend either each Friday or Saturday evening (depended on whether or not something else came up) to ride my bicycle a few miles down the road to Best Buy to go CD shopping. CD shopping for me is the ultimate way to relax. I would just stroll up and down the music isles for about an hour with nothing particular in mind until I've chosen what CD(s) I wanted to buy. Although she wasn't the reason I had this activity, there was a cashier that I liked and whether or not I'd had or would have a chance with her, I didn't care because we both enjoyed talking to each other. She was a music fan as well and she'd always strike up a conversation on what I was purchasing or whatever else that came up. Even in a better economy Best Buy is the type of store where there was almost never a line and we'd stand there talking for a good 10-15 minutes. She's moving out of town any day now and even wanted me to come back and see her before this happens but I don't have a way to get down there.

Right afterwards I would go to a nearby restaurant and have a nice dinner on my own (this isn't even due to being an Aspie; it's just really a great idea), usually T.G.I. Friday's, Buffalo Wild Wings or my favorite local pizza parlor.

Nowadays it's hard for me to do this because I almost never have a working bicycle and my bills are getting behind due to me missing time from work because of health issues (which also would make it hard even if I had a bike).

Does the activity have to be away from home? I used to build models right after dinner--my wife thinks I'm an Aspie because I used to do it day after day after day, for hours at a time... Not only that, they were exceptionally well designed and built--better than the kits you can buy. I couldn't help but correct the bad design issues. Of course, this would bug her since she wasn't getting enough attention.... These days I spend hours in the garden--the neighbors love the beautiful flowers during all the warm months of the year.
