Queensland floods
A thread for those affected in any way by the QLD floods to seek support and comfort from others in the forum, and for catharsis and release of sadness. For those both directly and indirectly affected by the floods. Write about what is making you sad.
I will start.
I am sad that my suburb, my city (Brisbane), my university, and all the places I live in and go and spend my time in have been inundated with brown sewerage water. I am sad for the losses of so many friends and neighbours in household items, personal belongings, and financial losses. I am sad that I have had to evacuate due to sickness and are unable to help people clean out their houses.
I feel in some ways it is affecting me more than it should, because of my tendency to become strongly attached to places.

I understand what your city is going through right now. The city that I live in had the very same thing happen in 2008. It will be a long and hard road for a lot of people. The only advise that I can give is to get involved with the recovery efforts as much as possible. Involvement often offsets a number of the emotions that can set in after an event after this.
I think in these circumstances you learn how indecent Nt's really can be.
1 They where warned not to panic buy at supermarkets so what do they do panic buy emptying the supermarkets. and clogging the streets , I just went during the floods as it was my normal shopping day, completely unawares (at 1 st ) why the shop was depleted of goods / why their was so many people their.
2. They treated the event like a 2 bit circus alley ( OMG, OMG Koshie was their ) side show all along River Terrace Kangaroo Point they had driven to the "event" clogging all the street and side streets slowing (significantly) the response time of emergency services. You''d think they'd be decent enough and park several kilometers away but no they don't think or don't care why and would they bother ? most motorists spend 10 minutes trying to find a car space within spitting distance of the mega mall entrance.
I guess it's better than walking 100 meters or so....

I walked to the CBD the day before the floods to borrow some books from the library (as I figured I'd be trapped inside for a while), and buy a few simple items I needed at the supermarket (a.k.a. ice-cream, dessicated coconut, and measuring cups). I was astounded at the hordes of people within the supermarket panic buying. It surprises me that people bought so much milk and cold goods - I was stupid in buying the ice-cream because I didn't think of the fact that when the power went out I would lose all my cold food, but if people were buying specifically because of the floods surely they should be stocking up on non-perishables that would not require refrigeration or cooking to eat.
That being said, I am sympathetic to the panic buyers; most people had never experienced a natural disaster before and didn't know what to do. I wish I hadn't bought the icecream though, it was all wasted along with the rest of my cold food and meat, power was out for approx 72 hours.

The sightseers aren't going away anytime soon. I know of bus trips that have come to Cedar Rapids, where I live, just to look at the flood damage, even close to three years after the fact. Not to come and do any volunteer work, but to sightsee.
We didn't have any panic on the stores that I was aware of before out flood, but we had a near riot break out when people were not allowed back in their homes as soon as they thought. There were alot of hazards and collapsed homes that had to be secured before people were allowed back in.

Well no it did not pan that way, the crowds came and went just as quickly as the flood waters which was very surprising, not so was they way the event was politicized, We had the mad uncles in the LNP who said we should've built more dams , to much water dam will fix that, not enough , ditto (never any talk of water saving on that side of politics.
We had the Greens (I kid you not) who said we should be sending the clean up bills to the mining companies! May be that wouldn't be such a bad thing they've been externalizing their costs for centuries now , and greening up our dirty economy wouldn't be such a bad thing people! It wont be economic Armageddon , people soon forget that pollution is waste .
and the piese de resistance ? Lance Armstrong who chipped in 50 grand! Why I don't know why ? their are better ways to donate that money Bangladesh floods comes to mind their a regular occurrence over their and our 20 deaths is a p*ss weak effort compared to the number of deaths you get in that country .
I suppose their are few people in that country that can afford a Lance Armstrong branded product. so why would he bother ?
I think he needs to take a leaf from Rudd (ex pm ) leaf book. Their was our Kevin creepingly cheerful as usual slacks and business shirt rolled up (you'd think he'd be more suitably attired in a rescue mission) coming to the aid of the confused and frightened Korean students! That was rolled gold even been the cynical and non trusting person that I am I couldn't help thinking our Kevin his not so bad , am I alone ?
