While I was over visiting my family today, I brought up my plans for future careers. As of right now, I'm going to school for nursing-but still doing the prerequesites. I told my mum that I didn't want to be a nurse after all, instead, I want to get my m.d. and specialize in genetics. She told me she didn't think it was a good idea!
I've always wanted to be a doctor- especially a neurologist...now I'm getting into genetics. But I was diagnosed with Epilepsy a few years ago, and that postponed any hopes of me going to school at all. (I was in high school at the time of my diagnosis, and my seizures were extremely severe. The first school I went to literally KICKED me out because of the severety...that's a different story, though) I barely finished high school with my class because of my seizures. But I did.
Now I'm starting college, and I'm working full time. The only time I have seizures is if I forget to take my meds-which is rare. She said unless my doctor does some radical changes with my medicine, there's no way I'd be able to stay up that many hours on end and do that much work.
I know she was just trying to help me, but it really hurt my feelings. I thought she was supposed to tell me "You can do anything you set your mind to".
I want to prove her wrong, but now I am second guessing my abilities. I thought it was my parents who were supposed to coach and support me, but the role seems a little flipped now...

You are right it should be your parents that are your biggest supporters, unfortunately sometimes it doesn't work out that way. It almost sounds like your mom is maybe fearful and worried for what you might go through to become a M.D. perhaps it brings back memories of what you went through in high school. It sounds like you went through so much with the seizures and you must have worked really hard to just be able to graduate with your class, to me it seems like you have what it takes. Don't doubt yourself! Perhaps a chat with your mom might reveal that she just needs some reassurance and then she will be onboard. It's worth a shot to explain your disappointment to her and that you need her support.
I wish you well on your new career choice.

Your parents are twits (no offense intended just attempting to express my opinions on the matter) and should be supporting you. and i would take there like of support as a challenge. I say do what makes you happy.
