The phrase a polar bear in the desert is used by me to denote total 'outsiderness', i.e. a polar bear is adapted to the opposite of a desert in the traditional sense.
I do for a few reasons.

1) Immature idiotic intolerant students. ((i.e. bullies.))

And also the stimming can become distracting, I work best with something in my hands I can 'squish'/fiddle with while I listen to what I'm being told. They make us put our pens down. (But... I ... need the pen.))

Also, you have to make eye contact (they nag you to) which means I barely remember the first setence. They won't let me just listen but I've not made eye contact, got the 'what did i just say?' question and proceeded to p*** them off by repeating it verbatim.

sigholdaccountlost it says in your profile you have a AS DX so tell them that that you are not trying to run things, but that you are more able to focus by simming they are not mind readers they could be thinking you are trying to run the class. And are they clueless teachers do they not know someone with a AS brain finds it hard to make eye contact and hear at the same time ? There are many metaphors but yes i did and still do feel disconnected from most humans Those herd thinking class mates who bully you when they are done with school will most likely do lame jobs given there lack of technical skills

I've felt the same way, when I was going through the School System.

We're not allowed to bring gum.

Hmm, I don't feel that I'm sticking out. Rather that I seem to disappear into the background and no-one seems to notice me.

Given the amount of hassle anyone slightly different from average normally gets, that might not be a bad thing. Plus no-one will expect much from you, so it's easier to look really clever :D

I feel like a Routemaster in a world of flowered Volkswagon Vans. Does that count?
