My cat has been very sick and is at the vet. They don't think he is going to make it. I know that doesn't sound like a big problem to a lot of people, but my four cats are my best friends and this one is the most special. I didn't even realize what a comfort he's been to me. And he is such a nice cat that even my daughter who hates cats with a passion is fond of him. Is it stupid for a cat to be such an important part of a person's life?

Now I'm wishing I could delete that post because i'm sure people will be offended that I'm acting like a dying cat is a tragedy. I must explain that I don't have a lot of human friends, and cats and me have always gotten along just fine, so to me, this really is like losing a best friend. He's helped me get through some hard times.

I'm not offended, at all. We all mourn loses of different things that are unique to our Personalities. I should know.

I understand. I lost my own cat (Wimpy) nearly a year ago. She was already suffering renal failure (she was about 18 or 19), and she didn't have long to live. Then a dog chased her, and she snapped her tendon. My dad took her to the vet to have her put down. I didn't want to see her die, so I consoled myself by watching Doctor Who. I think it was either "Aliens of London" or "World War Three", the new series was being transmitted on the ABC at the time.

 you have my deepest sympathy....my cats getting sick or dying is a real anxiety for me...I love both of my cats but one is very unique and he is always making me laugh and feel loved...I feel lucky to have met him and if he(i mean when he dies...thats hard to write)I will really miss him. The only small comfort for me would be that I would be able to give a home to another shelter cat and hopefully make their life a little better...

Thanks, all of you, for the kindness you've shown. Kitty made it through the night, but he's very weak. They told us he's not in pain, but something is wrong with his liver and his bone marrow, so he's in serious shape. We are about to go see him, since he probably won't get to come home. You all truly helped me feel like I can face this.

lae, I'm sorry you are having to go through this.

I have a cat but she is fine. However, I did I have a dog who died of a rare illness when she was only five. It was an terrible experience, and we didn't know what was happening for a long time. Actually we didn't know what occured until after she died. She had started losing weight for weeks but the local vet said she was OK. I was worried though, and then other people were worried. Then she collapsed, and we took her to the local vet, and they sent her to the city. We went back and forth from the suburbs into the city of Philadelphia where they were trying to figure things out for maybe a week or so. But they couldn't save her. We brought her home but she died the next day after being rushed to the veternarian. It was very sad.

I understand....My cat, Shadow, died this fall...I'd had him for 15 years and he was definitely my best friend. He had heart disease and other illnesses for a number of years, and it was really hard for me to see him get sicker. But, I wouldn't want to linger around being sick forever, and I knew he didn't either. I still miss him, but he'd had a pretty long life and it was just his time.
You have my sympathy, too...hang in there.

I saw my cat die after being hit by a car. I was about 13 at the time. There was no-one home so I buried her. I didn't want my Mum to come home and see my cat that way. It was traumatic, I didn't speak or come out of my room for a few days afterwards. I cried and cried.
Even now, about 16 years later, I get tears in my eyes whenever I think of my cat or look at her photo.
My Mum calls our cats "furry people", so I don't think that it's silly or strange in the least to mourn them when they have passed away, or feel very sad and emotional when they are sick. It's normal because cats are part of the family to a lot of people.

I totally understand how you feel...I too have four cats and one them in particular is my best friend. He follows me around and he even likes to cuddle up next to me (or even on top of me) when I'm sleeping. If something happened to him I don't think I could go on.

Thanks, everybody who answered. Also I'm sorry too for all the losses any of you have had. Kooloo died early this morning. We did have some good years with him, and I think he was happy most of the time. The vet thinks he had some type of cancer in his bone marrow, and that his body just couldn't keep going, but she's certain he wasn't in pain. You all have been very kind.

I'm really sorry to hear that...it almost makes me want to cry even though i've never even met your cat.

Thanks Funaho and Jetfox. Let's all hope for Kirby's speedy recovery. Since we have a lot of people here who love their pets, I'm wondering if we should turn this into a thread about everyone's pets and what they love about them, experiences with them, etc.

i can understand how you would feel... i have had a lot of pets, mostly rodents..
It is always a horrible experience when something you have cared for for so long and love so much gets sick or passes away.
