London olympics causing me to stress out
Wasn't sure where this belonged since I wanted people to read it, but I am once again very worried about the olympics in London, for two reasons. The first reason is people have been saying that the olympics will attract terrorists and bombing, and there will be so many people going down to London to watch the olympics, also causing chaos with the roads, and it panics me that all these people who are eager to go down to London are risking their lives and the next few days might be their last days on Earth and nobody seems to care. So I won't have sympathy if people did die from bombings during the olympics, because they must know about the risk. I just hope nobody who I know want to go down there. My friend is flying back from Poland in the middle of the olympics duration and landing at Heathrow Airport, which is also worrying me. I just hope they bomb Chelmsford aswell because I live near that area.
Thank God I don't live in London!! !! !! !! !! !
And the second thing that is bothering me is that I've heard there aren't enough security (all the more risk of terrorists killing everyone) and so they want to send unemployed people down to London to help with security or something (did I hear this right??), and I'm unemployed. London is the last place I want to go to during the olympics, and it will panic me to hell if I was forced to go down to London during the olympics, risking my life and being stuck with billions of people. I will be f*****g sh*****g my pants and crying my eyes out I reckon.
Is this true? Did anyone else in the UK hear about this? Or did they just mean unemployed men who volunteer to go down to London, or those who live in the London area????

There has been a shortfall in the numbers of security people due to the incompetence of G4S Security, a private security company who were given the security contract for the Games. The shortfall has been made up by Army personnel so there will be enough security. The level of security is very high. Even if unemployed people were being recruited as stewards (as they were for the Diamond Jubilee) nobody is going to suggest sending a frightened woman with Aspergers to London. You definitely don't need to worry about.
There is always a risk of a terrorist attack, I'm afraid that's just the world we live in. I share your worries about an attack, but our worries will make no difference. We have to trust that our security services know what they are doing. If we spend our lives living in fear, then we are letting the terrorists win.
I'm sure your friend will get back OK from Poland, although there may be a lot more queues and traffic.
High profile events will attract terrorists, however there are a lot of events happening at the Olympics so it is unlikely for any one person to be caught up in an attack.
Most previous terrorist attacks have not targeted large events (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_battles_and_other_violent_events_by_death_toll#Terrorist_attacks) particularly those which occurred in the western world. 7/7 and 11/9 only came into prominence as dates after the attacks. It would be possible to avoid everything that could possibly be attacked.
The G4S staff were meant to be there for basic crowd control, not high end intelligence based security. If anything having them replaced with police/army officers would increase security.
It is very unlikely that their flight (or any other) will be targeted, flights from Poland don't seem like "flagship" opportunities to terrorists (one of the major issues that Pan-Am faced was that they were a popular target for terrorism).
Heathrow will probably be nasty (Situation Normal!), but will not be taking many more flights during the Olympics.
It must be a pain living in the areas of London which become busy during the Olympics. Transport will be overcrowded (more so than normal) making it difficult to go about a normal routine.
I would avoid going into London during the Olympics due to the crowds, however I doubt that there is any reason to be afraid for safety. Since the hotel costs are high (for London) during the Olympics that would be another reason not to go.

It was pretty cool that the 2010 Winter Olympics were held in Canada, but I couldn't care less about the Olympics the rest of the time. Too much competition and pressure and rivalry between countries. If someone wins a silver the public act like they miserably failed their entire country because they didn't win a gold medal. Of course terrorists will be a threat everywhere no matter what. The Americans are not winning the war at all. Terrorists could show up at your front door and kill you, like that nightmare I had years ago when I was around 12 years old.
It's something to think about, but you can't live your life in fear. When you live in fear, the terrorists win. When you don't let them get to you, they loose.
Look at Israel, they routinely get buses blown up, yet Israeli's continue to get on buses and ride them. Giving into fear just let's the terrorists win. Letting the terrorists dictate how you live your life, that's how they win.
That's their goal, not to kill, but to create such terror that we all stay home, collapse our economy.
I won't go down with them. I won't be afraid. I will be vigilant, but I won't hide in fear.

Isn't that rather harsh? People are out to enjoy themselves. If we worried about every single little possibility, we would all be stuck indoors.
