Despite that I don't play M-rated games, I think the music and sound effects in some of my games are making me subconsciously fearful, does this happen to anyone else? Do I need to take a long brake from these Metroid titles?

What games are you talking about other than Metroid?

Personally, I do not think video games affect people at all. I've been a gamer for a very long time and no game has ever effected me.

It depends on what kind of games you're playing. Silent Hill? Doom? Resident Evil?

You aren't being effected by video games as a whole, but Metroid games, especially the Metroid Prime series, are renowned for being very moody, claustrophobic and depressing. It's ... err ... part of their charm.

If you feel that these sorts of video games, films, or any form of media are effecting you too much, yes, take a break and play something more light hearted, such as Mario, or if it's something deeper you're looking for, even The Legend of Zelda games aren't that dark.

Oh my goodness yes. I had nightmares from playing I think it was Doom 3? The last one out. Also if I play World of Warcraft for more than a few hours a day (like 10-12 hrs daily while unemployed) I dream about it constantly.

I think that just like anything that can become addicting, they can cause irritability and depression....

Then anything involving real life can make you agro for taking you away from your addiction....
I TOTALLY agree on the music subconsciously making you angry...

I switch to innocent sounding games in small doses like animal crossings etc, and then I feel all innocent and happy again, where as when I used to play killing games I became more and more disconnected.

Thanks guys for your opinions, there was also a lot of gun-heavy movies my roommates watched at night. The sound of real guns kept looping until I felt terrified.

Hmm can't say so much games or movies, I think I am pretty Jaded. Give me your gorest or disturbing and I'll still sleep soundly but give me something intesly deep or moody and I'll get depressed and sleep like crap. Music works well for me as mood elevator though expecially classical. When I am feeling down I'll hit up some beethoven.

It's probably just an urban legend but did you ever hear about this?

Perhaps you do.

I've never been able to watch an entire film from end-to-end but I'm consumed by video games and books, one of the few pieces of self-discipline that I'm able to excercise is to put a game away once I find I'm dreaming that I'm still there. Seriously! I find that sensation physically sickening and disorientating and it lasts for days once I've had "the dream".

The fact that you're asking the question you're asking makes me think that you know the answer already ;)
