My poor cat died today, as we had to put her down. She had some unknown infection, and we had little money to pay for the diagnostic tests to rule anything out or try and save her. I feel absolutely awful and knowing that had I done a little better in my personal life, I might've had the resources to deal with this crisis. What makes it worse is that my cat always made it a point to nurse us when we were feeling depressed or sick, like she had an appetite for the morose. She was a beautiful cat, but had a poor standard of living the last month of her life, and I'm afraid I neglected her in some way. She had digestive problems on top of everything and parts of her were caked in filth, but she was uncooperative toward washing. I just wish I could have done better for her, knowing that I probably could have if I cared enough.

There's no need to reply to this, I just needed to vent my frustration with myself.

I'm sure she had a much better life living with you--many cats aren't fortunate enough to have loving owners.

I've been through it twice. It hurts. And words are no consolation, therefore I'm not attempting any.
But remember: there's a little kitten growing somewhere and she wants to be yours.

I have lost many beloved cats over the years and I know your pain. Please don't be too hard on yourself. I had to put down my cat that I had for eleven years due to cancer. I didn't have the money for treatments, but even more so I wanted to save her the needless suffering when she didn't understand what was going on anyway. Sometimes the animal just wants to go to their rest and not suffer. :(

I'm very sorry to hear about that. Atleast she won't be suffering anymore, if she was.
Please don't beat yourself up, you don't deserve it.

Sorry for your loss. There's a cat living with me now. We're not close so I haven't given her a name. I just call her cat for now. She may not stay anyway as she's a stray and is probably going to go off to somewhere else. I kind of half expect that.

O Great Mew,
please take this sweet kittypuss
into your mighty paws, hold her in
your eternal manes for all eternety.

Please help the kind and loving
humans that took care of her
find comfort and solace,
even with her passing.

This I ask In The Name Of
The Great Lion
Of Egypt.

So it is done.

The last cat I had to have put down was the exact same age and diagnosis. I think I felt worse because eleven isn't old. It seemed so unfair. And of course, whenever you have to make the decision, no matter how much they're suffering, you always feel like you killed them.

It's going to hurt. The only thing you can do is wait for the pain to ease. I have another cat now, and she doesn't replace the one who's gone, but it's still good to have her here.

I agree. My condolences for your loss. If you can, a wonderful tribute is to save the life of another cat by adopting it from the pound.

I sure wish I could...

From what you discribe there was likely not much you could do to save her, as good is vets are now when a cat gets sick like that its usally terminal no matter how much money you spend, all you can often do is delay. Not to mention the pain the cat feels going through the treatment, I have been there done that. Give it some time to heal and then welcome a new family member.

So sorry for your loss Moronerd, but don't blame yourself. If an animal is ill, it is sometimes best to let them go. You gave your kitty a good loving home and a good life.

Kitty is in a better place now. There's nothing you really could have done. Cats don't like baths, I'm reminded of old Garfield cartoons where the cat does all sorts of diabolical things to get out of a bath, but it's not so funny when it's your real life cat that is filthy. Just mourn, then go out and get a new cat. It may take a while for you to mourn, that's ok.

Thanks for the words, everyone. I feel better today, in part from the support, and also because my cat isn't suffering anymore, which was causing stress in itself. She's in the Happy Hunting Grounds, eating her favorite prey, baby mice.

I still have another cat that was kind of a bully to her but likes to suck up to we humans. I'll still consider getting a new one to keep him company, or not. He doesn't seem to get along with other cats.
