With all the provocations of North Korea I'm scared of a nuclear holocaust. It's propably not a rational fear, but when I lay in bed I'm scared that at any moment I could see this bright flash meaning a nuclear bomb hit my town and me dying a few seconds later. Or scared that it hit during my sleep and not even be aware of anything and be already dead. The day is less frightening as I can check at any moment what is happening, but still, my father once said that Sherbrooke was about 20th on the prorities of russians for a nuclear strike as a important point for communications, which is scary in itself. I'm only two kilometers away form downtown, so if a nuke fall here I'm pretty much dead.
Well, in the end I guess it may not be that rational, but still, I'm scared. :pale:

I'm scared too. Not so much of death, but if the nukes explode in the atmosphere or something and cause an EMP.

For what it's worth, I highly doubt that the North Koreans are capable of launching a nuclear missile. I don't know enough about the issue to be certain, but still, we're probably safe from North Korea.

Sherbrooke may have been the Soviets' 20th priority target like you say, but there's a major difference between North Korea and the Soviets: the Soviets were actually capable of launching functioning nukes if they so desired, and they had enough nukes to target them at dozens of enemy cities. If the North Koreans do indeed have a nuke, I can almost guarantee you a major US city would be targeted long before any Canadian city. And if the North Koreans do have a nuke, it's probably not capable of even reaching the eastern part of the US or Quebec, so as horrible as it would be if the North Koreans were indeed to nuke somebody (and like I said above, this is VERY unlikely to happen), you shouldn't need to fear for your own personal safety, because Sherbrooke will almost certainly not be a particularly high priority target, nor a practical one.

In summation, I don't think your fears regarding North Korea nuking you are unlikely to come to pass, so I wouldn't worry too much about it if I were you. I hope this was helpful.

A bit of the fear come from the possiblity that the situation degenerate, and thus country like China would strike. I guess it's not very rational, but still I guess possible, and it's more than enough for anxiety and OCD.

No, I understand why you might be afraid of the whole situation. I'm not really afraid of being nuked, but I definitely have some irrational fears of my own. Not that it's any of my business, but if you're not receiving any sort of therapy/medication for anxiety and OCD, then perhaps you should look into that if this is something that's significatly affecting your ability to function.

For what it's worth, I think China is trying to keep North Korea in check, and I don't think they will back North Korea if they do anything too crazy (like try to bomb the US or invade South Korea or something). The US and China are too economically interdependent for them to risk angering the US too much on this issue, let alone nuking the US. And China's leadership is considerably more stable than that of the US, and they know that nuking the US would lead to nuclear war, and they don't want that. So in summation, China is almost certainly NOT going to attack the US (or Canada).

Dear Tollorin,

I speak as a 50 year old survivor of the cold war. During my years in college, one of the standard activities among the geeky science types at some of the schools I attended was figuring how close we were to significant targets and how close the campus would be to the edge of the crater.

I lived with nuclear paranoia from the age I first became aware of the world, sometime in the early 1970's, until the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, and I was much more worried about a nuclear attack during the coup attempt against Yeltsin than I am now.

Let me give you reasons to relax.

1. North Korea has very few, if any, useable nukes. They had one successful underground test, and they don't have a massive economy to subsidize their ambitions.

2. They are either trying to miniaturize their nuke to fit it on a missile, or they are using bombers. We can shoot down either.

3. China and Wal-Mart is a horrific two-headed chimera of pretend communism and raw capitalist greed with every reason to want trade to continue uninterrupted between America and China.

4. Much higher on North Korea's priority list than anywhere in America are our bases in Guam and Okinawa, because that's where the American counterattack will start from.

5. South Korea is on our side, not just the government, but the people. If war breaks out, there is an army that speaks fluent Korean right there, and fighting on our side.

6. Conditions in the north are so desperate that if the south invades with nothing but 10 ton trucks full of rice, you'll see Kim's troops surrendering.

Let these thoughts comfort you.

Good luck and I hope you will consider me
Your friend,

Ikari Gendo

I've been listening to North Korean and Chinese shortwave broadcasts, and I'm convinced that NK doesn't have the tech to put a nuke on a missile, nor will China back them if they attack South Korea or the US. I think at this point the Chinese are getting fed up with Kim, and are willing to let the US take him out so they can put somebody else there. Korea will not unify, the Chinese don't want US troops on the Yalu, and NK is too backwards compared to SK to make it work.

They aren't going to be able to nuke anything, man.

Their technology is not up to the task, and they don't have very many missiles.

If they manage to put one with a nuke in the air, we are almost guaranteed to shoot it down, no problem.

I just want them to stop doing testing, we have enough radioactivity in the air.
