So I have dreads and the roots have gotten kind of messed up complicated with dandruff...plus I want to look for a job. So trying to figure out a good shorter style that would work on me...I have sides of my head buzzed and dreads still but I want to remove the dreads but with leaving longer hair on top to balance out whatever I have to get shaved off. It is possible to brush out dreads but I don't think I have the patience so just going for cutting them off and getting it styled into something that could look ok for a job.

I think to get real tips and advice you would need to upload a photo. I mean, you could cover your eyes with sunglasses if you wanted to, it would just be easier so people could match a style to your faceshape, etc.

I had a friend(?*) with foot-long dreads who brushed them out, and it worked fine. (She did cheat and cut a couple off that were hidden underneath.) She had straight hair and it went back to its normal state.

*Not certain 'friend' is the correct term for this person, but for lack of a better word... Ha!

[EDIT:] Crap, I misread your post as "Is it possible to brush out dreads"... But now I realize you're asking for advice on short hairstyles, in which case I am clueless.

I should just do it and get a bunch cut off....my brother has already cut off his actually totally shaved his head to get new tattoos on his head...maybe a little bit overkill with the tattoos, but I saw a picture of what he got and it looks pretty freaking awesome, some kind of cool nordic dragon design, so cant really tell him it was a bad choice because I think it looks awesome.

But yeah the dreads arent working so its either a mohawk style cut or maybe sort of an undercut bob cut, saw a couple google pictures of that which looked ok...I guess I am just nervous about getting tons of my hair cut off, even though I know it would probably look better and i could properly treat my dandruff better that way. Just nervous about getting a significantly short haircut involving buzzed hair on the sides but I have wanted to try that kind of thing for a really long time.. so maybe it would be worth it.

Also I am becoming a bit afraid of the government, like how long till opposing trump becomes a crime with this administration.

Your dreads look awesome! But I hear you about needing something easier and more 'professional' (sigh)... Wish I had advice but it sounds like you've got some good ideas!

I do believe our Constitution will hold up, and we will always have the right to free speech. (But opposing him might earn you an angry 5 am rage tweet!)

You might look good with a pixie cut, but it would be a big change. I used to have a buzz cut & loved it, but it needs to be cut often to look good. Too high maintenance for me now, but it was easy to communicate to the stylist what I wanted: a 6 on top & 3 on sides & back. Feels amazing, especially in summer.
